Great tool. Makes quick work of any branches that can fit in. It can absolutely lop your finger off. Always store it without the battery and out of the reach of children or anyone else you don't want to grab it.

It's normal to visually see sparks with this tool. It's a brushed tool. It's also listed in the Dewalt manual that comes with it that you will observe sparks. It will be more noticeable in lower light conditions as well. However, the tool works great!
Thanks for the info. I called Dewalt and they said there shouldn't be sparks. Obviously, they don't know their tools very well.

Do they even fail to cut through a branch and get stuck?
Replacement blades are $35. If you did get the blade stuck from cutting something you would remove the battery. Use an Allen Key to remove the blades from the pruner and then use a pair of flat pliers to pull the 2 pieces loose. While you have them out you can put them in the vise to straighten them if needed and use a file to sharpen the cutting blade.

Same, but I won't use it enough and it's terrifyingly easy to accidentally stick your fingers in it. At least with a chainsaw, you're not reflexively using your other hand to hold the tree while you cut.

Thanks!

I've been resisting buying one of these but the price is too good not to. I wanted the red 6" chain saw but this will do 90% of the job.
This will do 90% of the work faster than a chainsaw, because most work is cutting up branches. However, for the other 10%, you need a chainsaw or a saw.

It's a rare customer support person for a large company who has a clue.

This thing is a beast and seems like it can take a finger easy. I just make sure every single cut I have both hands on it. One holding the trigger and the other hand on the handle across from the trigger.

Every time this is listed the comments flood in that it can cut fingers off….has anyone ever tested to confirm this? Because if it can't it loses some of its appeal

Serious question now is this mostly used if you're only cutting a few branches here and there? Trying to think of a use case as opposed to just using a hedge trimmer.

Does anyone have one of these that doesn't throw sparks. I've returned four of them for that reason.
Do you mean it's actually showering sparks out of the case? That would be weird. If you're seeing sparks inside the grills, that's normal operation for a brushed motor. It's a lot more noticeable when it's brand new.

Are these the ones that don't stop until they cut your fingers off?

There is a limit to what size you can cut. They've never got stuck on me before. When I try to cut things that are slightly too big, it usually just makes a half cut. Then I just make another cut to cut through the rest of it. My main user case is palm tree fronds and birds of paradise (the big blue type) stems.

Anything that's obviously too big, I use the DeWalt single handed reciprocating saw.
