As an insane crazy endurance athlete, can anyone make a good argument for this? I used a chest straps over a decade ago, when watches didn't provide HR.. All I see is a device that's going to give me slightly better diagnostics compared to the Fenix on my wrist.

Yet, here I am.. compelled to buy it.. ughh

There are some issues with this strap. A new firmware is supposw to come sometime this year.

Check out garmin forum on garmin website, under sensor and accessories. I bought two in last 2 years ans both had issues and needed to be replaced under warranty. The replacements I have right now still not very reliable, even in steady tempo runs . Heartrate sometimes just spike up 10-20 beats for no reason ( I wear two devices so can cross check ,also by rpe)
This happens on all my watches , 245, epic Gen 2, epic pro 51

I actually find the elevated 5 sensor on epix pro or Fenix pro to be better than the garmin hrm pro plus (when it shouldn't be )

In 10 over 1 hour workouts, just about all 10 will suffer random split second disconnects (lose respiration data then get erratic heart rate reading.
Due to the unreliability of the strap, I dont wear it on every workout now.😔 don't want erroneous data to screw up everything

I tried a 40 dollars no name strap my friend bought from Amazon, it works just as good !

While I am a total garmin fan, I have mix feeling on this strap.

Forgot to mention I ran a half marathon on Sunday. 3 mins in my garmin hrm pro plus started to lose connection and gave me random heart rate number. (New battery and everything )

I decided to abandon the connection and ran with epix Gen 2(elevat 4 sensor) and worked out better .

that was annoying af to having to go thru the menus and disconnect strap connection.

You can get a Polar H10 for ~$50 "refurbished" from HeartRateMonitorUSA -- I know it sounds like a fake website. Sometimes is with a new Garmin strap (comes in bulk packaging) and sometimes with their in-house third party straps. Killer deal and is considered the gold standard of chest HRM.

I don't see a reason to get this strap now that all the running dynamics now run on any modern Garmin watch as of a recent update. Running dynamics are also questionably useful also. I'd also avoid this HRM b/c the unit is connected to the strap, so you can't replace the strap when it inevitably wears out like you can on a Wahoo Tickr or Polar H9/10. Also don't buy a Wahoo Tickr also, they've sent me 2 new units and 3 new straps over a 18 month period, which is why I replaced it with an H10.

Curious what HR stats are used for? I usually alternate between running 1 mile as fast as I can and doing 4x400m, again, as fast as I can. Pretty sure I'm at least at 70-80% HR max during those runs

Endurance training in specific heart rate zones, for me anyway. Another data point to measure effort and progress over time.
