Hello everyone
Here at Slickdeals we are always on the lookout for amazing comments, insights, product and merchant reviews, and even recipes. In fact, that's what got me to be an active participant way back when - the power of unfiltered commentary.
Over the last week we have asked our staff members to be on the lookout for clever, funny, engaging, sweet, whimsical, kind (you get the drill) comments and nominate them for "Staff Picks". We purposely wanted to keep it on the down-low, and reward folks who were doing it "just because"
What's in it for the commenters? They are all going to get $5 Amazon Gift card. We will reach out to them and we will get them delivered via their preferred method.
Note, do click into the quotes - some of them were shortened to fit into a single post
and many of them generated some incredible replies and were based on some red-carpet level lead-ins.

It is the ground temperature you want to watch for - like 55 or so.
Pre-emergents should be applied at least twice a year. As previously mentioned, they should be applied in the spring before the ground temperature reaches 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Then it should be applied again in the early fall after temperatures begin to come down. https://lawnlove.com/blog/when-an...erbicides/ https://sodsolutions.co https://todayshomeowner Good post on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/lawncare...d_to But don't put this down if you are going to put down grass seed! If you do, then the seeds won't grow - the pre-emergent prevents their growth. If you have green like I do in my lawn (poa annua in my bermuda grass in NC), I will spray the bad boys with Roundup at this point - I won't have green grass until mid-May. Also check with your extension agent or your local ag school - they will have some good opinions. |

*** Updated with feedback from comments and a new winner - old winner is now #7***
I'm calling Dollar Tree the winner even though it's the 4th cheapest. It's only 7% more per square foot than the #1 price, but with no rebates, memberships, or huge packages to buy. All competitors are at least two-ply, none of the one-ply Scott 1000-like garbage. Detailed Results and links (lowest per-square-foot cost to highest):

Decided to do paper towel since my toilet paper thread was well-received.
This isn't so much a single deal as a price comparison of paper towels, distilled to a per-square-foot price. I'm declaring the second lowest per-sf price, Sam's Club POM as the winner. The Walgreens deal is complicated, requires rebates/coupons, and is 1-ply. That said, I bought from Walgreens, and provide details on how to get the deal at the bottom of this post. When the Walgreens deal expires, let me know in comments and I'll update the post. All brands are white, on rolls, and embossed. All of them except Walgreens are two-ply, which I only included because I use it myself and it works well for me. No industrial brown sheets without embossing, even if it is two-ply. Must be on roll, white, and textured. Detailed Results and links (lowest per-square-foot cost to highest):

There's no right way or wrong way to use the exact ingredients but the sauce is the main thing. You should be able to get most of this stuff in your local asian market. My may is not conventional so here it is.
You can google how to make this stuff in the web but here's my ingredients 1 2-lb or 1kg of plain rice cakes, note that you can buy the flat kind and not the roll kind. 3 tablespoon of gochujang paste. Note if it is too hot, you can mix 1/2 of hot gochujang paste and the other half black bean paste. 1-2 tablespoon of raw sugar 1 tablespoon of soup stock powder instead of soy sauce for the umami flavor especially if it has msg 1 6-10 oz of fish cakes. Note that I never used fish cakes and used 1 lb of ground pork instead because it was cheaper 1 tablespoon of garlic For vegetables: I use about 12oz to 1lb of green cabbage or napa cabbage. 1 onion chopped You can use mushrooms or scallons but this is optional. You can use hard boiled eggs too but it is optional. |

Tl;dr:
An electric guitar ($66) also needs a combo amp ($40 - $80), a cable to plug the guitar into the amp ($2 - $10), and a tuner ($5 - $10). An electric guitar has no real sound without an amplifier, so you are correct in saying you need an amplifier. An acoustic guitar has a hollow body where the sound can resonate, and that hollow body and thin wood amplifies the sound, which is why you don't need an amplifier for a small room with an acoustic guitar. On the other hand, you can't hear an electric guitar from even a few yards away without an amp. An electric guitar is made of a thick chunk of solid wood, so without a thin wood or the hollow body, the sound of an electric guitar without an amplifier is a quiet "twang". When you shop for an amp, you're probably shopping for an amplifier/speaker/cabinet combo. Professionals buy amplifier circuits that are separated from the speakers and their wooden cabinets. For beginners, you're shopping for the "combo" where they're just one unit. Unless you're rich or you believe you'll be rocking on stage, you don't need to buy the speaker separately from the amplifier. The average price for a 10 watt combo solid-state amplifier is about $80 MSRP. Amps come in "solid-state" or "tube". Tube amps are usually more for moderate/advanced players, and they cost a lot more. Tube amps use vacuum tubes instead of cheaper circuits. Tube amps are also louder, so a 10 watt tube amp is more equivalent to a 50 watt solid-state amp. Let's talk solid-state, since they are cheaper and more attainable. 5 watt solid-state amps are ones you can clip on your belt or put on your desk for a personal playtime, and they are usually powered by a battery. 10 watt amps are enough to fill a bedroom. 50 watt amps are for small venues, or to rattle the windows in your living room. 100 watt or more solid-state amps can be used for gigs where there are actual drum sets. Drums can drown out a 50 watt solid state combo amp, so aim for 100 watts or more if you're playing with a live drummer. But an amplifier will just give you an amplified "clean" sound. To get some slightly dirty, grungy, or screeching sounds, you need distortion. You can make the amplifier distort the sound if it has a "gain" option, and a lot of combo amps already come with this setting built in. If you've ever monitored sound levels, you know that if a microphone is too "hot" and clips into the red, the sound becomes distorted. This is the same idea on an electric guitar, and thankfully, electric guitars sound great when the sound is distorted. So, the more you crank the "gain" knob on a guitar, the more it becomes screechy. A little bit of gain for the blues, a little more for rock, and max it out for metal. All other effects that you hear from your favorite artists can be added live, or in post-production. Chorus, phase, overdrive, wah-wah, reverb, etc. can all be added in real-time with guitar pedals, or you can add it later with software on your computer. If you want to do it live, then you chain your tools by going from your guitar to a pedal with the effect that you want, then from the pedal to your amp. When you want to use the effect, you step on the button on the pedal to get the effect. So as a beginner, you need to buy an electric guitar, a combo amp, and a tuner so you can stay in tune every session. That means that in addition to the $66 you pay for the guitar listed on this post, you need to budget another $40 to get a 5 watt or 10 watt amp so you can hear what you're playing. Hopefully the $40 amp you get on sale has a "gain" or "distortion" function so you can save yourself the hassle of buying add-on pedals. If you don't see a cheap combo amp for $40, just pay attention. Coupons or sales from Adorama, Monoprice, Sweetwater, Guitar Center, or even Amazon drops 10 watt amps to $40 every month. And don't buy cheap amps used: Beginners and teenagers buy the 10 watt amps, and since they don't know any better, they crank up the volume to max and break the speaker. Most amps aren't meant to be used past volume 9/10, but a teenager will always crank it up. You end up with crackling speakers, and as a beginner, you won't know that the sound coming out of that used speaker is bad. |
When "No HDMI" Actually Fits Award
Get Ripped, Not Ripped Off Award (2 recipients)
As some have already mentioned, just exercise alone won't do much for you if you're not aware of how your diet has affected your weight gain to begin with. While I can't explain an entire plan for you here's some points to consider.
1) Research what your BMR is. It's understanding how many calories you need to maintain your weight. Here is a basic BMR Calculator. https://www.calculator. Once you have an understanding of that, the basic principle is to eat less calories than your maintenance needs, in order to see yourself losing weight. Don't ever listen to anyone who claims "Calories don't matter". I promise you they don't understand how the human body works. 2) Now that you have that basic understanding, try tracking your calories for a week, or two. Meaning, use a calorie tracking app and do your best to enter things you've eaten throughout the day/weeks. This exercise is to give you a glimpse of how many calories you may have been eating to understand how you gained your weight. And it will also give you better awareness of how many calories certain foods are. And be truthful. Do your best to add everything you put in your mouth. This is for your sake. If you lie, you're only lying to yourself. 3) Now that you have a better understanding of the fundamentals, now look into changing up the things you eat to start eating within a certain caloric goal to lose weight. Don't over do it at first. Let's say you start off with 2500 to maintain your weight. Try going down to 2200 to 2000 calories. And maybe you may not like tracking calories, but at least with the above exercise, you can take a glance at nutrition labels and give yourself an estimate. The reason why I would suggest this first, rather than just people saying "Eat healthier", is because even healthy foods can be calorically dense. You'd be surprised how many calories are in Nuts, even when they're considered "Healthy". And I've had friends eat bags of nuts and not realizing they consumed like 2000 calories in just almonds. And Salads are healthy right? Sure, until you throw bacon bits, and tons of salad dressing on it, which would then defeat the purpose. 4) With new nutrition goals and a plan to be in a caloric deficit, now you can add your exercises and with more activity and decrease in calories, that's where you'll start to see big improvements over time. Don't rush it, and don't go on starvation diets. It will take time to see big changes. Good luck. |
H.A.I.K.U. Award
Go 1/18th Scale Some Rocks Award
That's correct, this is a 1/18th scale crawler, meant specifically to climb mini obstacles like a mountain goat. So these aren't your traditional "run fast and wild" RC car, but they're a ton of fun in their own right!
I could go on forever but here's the quick and dirty. This is a brand new model, just got released so reviews are trickling in. But here's one of the very best reviewers in the business going through it in detail https://youtu.be/5xrX06Bf1pc?si= Is this a screaming deal? Not exactly, it's $100 right now and it'll go up to its normal price if $120 in a couple of weeks I'd guess. Here's the thing about crawlers, it all comes down to the mods you put on it. It's a deep, dark hole you'll walk into (trust me) but you'll look to upgrade things like wheels & tires first (almost a must-do), then you'll start adding brass parts to weigh it down so it won't flip, then you the world is your oyster: motors, esc's, lights, suspension, you name it! So what's the catch? It's all about the aftermarket support. In this class (size) there are really two key players: Axial & Traxxas. There are a handful of really great other players like FMS, HobbyPlus, Panda,m, and even Furitek (formerly focused on electronics) came out with a kickass model recently. Red Cat has been in RC for a LONG time, but focused on the 1/10th scale mostly, so they're not newcomers but they are new to the scale. My thoughts: this is a great starter rig, but did you're looking for upgrade paths, this one will be a tiny bit limited for now. If you want the very broadest upgrade paths, you're gonna wanna go Traxxas (primarily for those looking for a great looking truck) or Axial (if you're looking to eventually do competitions). If you wanna spend a bit more there are some excellent options at the $150-$200 that are closer to excellent products. But honestly, if you're just getting into it, I'd HIGHLY recommend trying something like this and if you enjoy it then look to buy a used, already upgraded rig off of FB Marketplace or Offer Up. Let someone else pay full price and you'll pay half price already upgraded. But that's just me, you do you!! |
Stay Safe Y'all Award
For the uninformed. I work in IT in healthcare. The test are not going to stop you from getting COVID, they will let you know you have COVID. What you choose to do with this information is up to you and, let's face it, your employer. For us it means working from home for at least the day (for a non-positive result) or working from home for at least the week (for a positive result). We care about our coworkers and have the ability to protect them from getting sick. Which in turn protects them from spreading it to their families and patients.
We are lucky enough to have an employeer that cares about spreading disease and are lucky enough to have the ability to work from home. One of my coworkers is currently working from home because he is sick and I appreciate him for it. |
Under (Water) Pressure Award
Going to go down a little bit of a shower head rabbit hole.. all of these are just my opinions and experience.
Similar to lightbulbs , I have accumulated a random library of experience when it comes to showerheads. TLDR is in my experience none of these "high pressure" rainshower heads really deliver what they promise. It's kind of an oxymoron actually because for the amount of water rain shower heads deliver, I don't see how they can physically deliver "higher pressure". Typically the only way to do this is to remove any restrictors in the showerhead to increase GPM (gallons per minute) flow. If you do this, then maybe you can get higher pressure/flow, but at the cost of paying 2-3 times as much for a shower session. For a family of 5, this is a no go for me. Awhile back I went down the oxygenated (Oxygenics) shower head route. FWIW, these shower heads absolutely deliver on higher pressure, but almost to a fault. First time I used one it actually hurt it came out so hard, but eventually I learned to actually enjoy the pressure. They also do it using a reasonable GPM rate (1.8'ish). The basic principle is that the head actually sucks in air using the pressure of the outcoming water, mixes it back into the water and pressurizes it more. This achieves both higher pressure as well as the feel that there's more water than there is actually coming out because the water is "bubbly" if that makes sense. Bigger globs of it vs. streams. After using Oxygenic shower heads for a few years, me and the wife actually decided we didn't like them. The main down side to these are that they work SO well, that they create a vortex of air inside your shower. This air can absolutely be felt , like a breeze or draft, especially around the lower parts of your body where the water isn't hitting directly. It's strong enough to lift shower curtains. Having parts of your body feel cool during a hot shower sucks. Also, Oxygenic shower heads are ugly IMO. Eventually we landed on High Sierra shower heads. These have similar performance of an Oxygenics head, but without using oxygenated water.. rather just good shower head design. We own all 3 GPM flows, 1.5, 1.8 and 2.0, and while you can tell the 1.5 is more water efficient, the pressure and enjoyment level is relatively equal for all 3. So, efficient water usage.. amazing pressure, no draft. All around win for the most part.. the only downside is that High Sierra heads use the basic principles of a firehose design, so all the water comes out of one center hole, which means there's no reason to have this big plate hanging above you. Aesthetically this makes it a bit of anamoly vs. other showerheads. So there you have it. Take all my useless knowledge and experience on traversing the shower head landscape. Recommend High Sierra if you're after good pressure that's water efficient. Rain shower heads are a totally different type of sensation. Personally I would much rather have high pressure vs. avg pressure + a bunch of streams, and I've never seen a rainshower head that can deliver both decent pressure and water efficiency. I've never stood in the rain and marveled how nice it felt. But to each their own. |

Just remember that this unit requires an active internet connection to work. Don't expect to watch OTA TV or your recordings with this tuner when your internet is down. Don't expect to watch OTA TV or your recordings when the Tablo servers are down (happened last year on a Sunday during NFL football season).
Unlike the Legacy versions, this unit can only be watched on your local network, not remotely while out of your house. Yes, the guide data is free, but you are agreeing to send all of your actions on the device to the mothership. Remember in this case you are the product whose data is being collected and sold. If you want a Tablo, look at the Legacy devices which don't have any of the tracking and you can watch them outside your local network. (You'll need to pay for guide data on this device). https://us-store.tablotv.c |

The VR-gonomics Award
I'm going to get downvoted by people who can't afford the Quest 3 and want to cope but I wanted to give some helpful advice.
I own both the quest 2 and the quest 3, and wanted to give some insight into people who are on the fence. The Quest 3, while being $499, is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over the Quest 2. -The quest 3 has a huge resolution bump over the quest 2. Honestly the quest 2 is pretty blurry and feels like a budget headset. There's significant screen door effect (you can see the pixels and looks like you are staring through a screen door while the quest 3 eliminates this problem). Not only this but the new lenses makes the image sharp all the way through while the quest 2 feels blurry depending on where you look. -The quest 3 is much more comfortable to wear because of better weight distribution. This is huge when you plan to play for more than 20-30 minutes because the two gives a lot of fatigue because of the weird weight distribution. -The 3 uses a new set of lenses called pancake lenses which greatly increase the field of view from 95 degrees to 110 degrees. This makes it much more immersive and life like. In the quest 2, you can very easily see the edges of the image which is immersion breaking. -The quest 3 has more accurate tracking and allows you to use mixed reality/augmented reality because of the pass through cameras in the front. The quest 2 does not allow this. This is very important when you want to be able to see your surroundings without having to take your headset off. It also makes the head set more future proof. -I used the mixed reality on my quest 3 to learn piano. The piano notes came Down like in guitar hero on my Own piano in real time. It was an amazing feature that greatly expanded the capabilities past just gaming. Honestly, unless you are an extreme casual, I would pass on the quest 2 even at this price. If you just plan to vary occasionally use it then go for it but otherwise, I would say that the quest 3 is definitely worth the money and this is coming from someone who loves to save money. To be honest, it's pretty surprising just how much Meta upgraded the headset over their previous iteration. It feels like a next gen product now and is by far the best value on the market. The Quest 2 never made me feel that way even when it was new. |

Here's a little tip. If you like the way these shoes look, wear them. Ignore what people you've never met online have to say about them. Bonus - they're always cheap cuz most people are boring and only wear boring shoes.
I personally only wear unusually colored shoes like this and I can promise you that more people notice, mention and like my shoes than the guy wearing boring white sneakers. Wear what you like…not what you think other people will. |
Be on the lookout for more fun stuff over the coming weeks.
