Top Comments
No need to be concerned about the sodium levels like someone was in the comments. Just don't eat all of the sauce.
Tteokbokki goes well with hardboiled egg fyi. Throw in some green onions as well.
If you wanted to go a step further, buy some fishcakes from ur local asian grocery and throw some in as well.
You can google how to make this stuff in the web but here's my ingredients
1 2-lb or 1kg of plain rice cakes, note that you can buy the flat kind and not the roll kind.
3 tablespoon of gochujang paste. Note if it is too hot, you can mix 1/2 of hot gochujang paste and the other half black bean paste.
1-2 tablespoon of raw sugar
1 tablespoon of soup stock powder instead of soy sauce for the umami flavor especially if it has msg
1 6-10 oz of fish cakes. Note that I never used fish cakes and used 1 lb of ground pork instead because it was cheaper
1 tablespoon of garlic
For vegetables:
I use about 12oz to 1lb of green cabbage or napa cabbage.
1 onion chopped
You can use mushrooms or scallons but this is optional.
You can use hard boiled eggs too but it is optional.
Same as 3 tbsp of ketchup.

It is really weird. I'm not into it. I'd rather just eat pasta noodles. I feel like I could choke on it if not careful enough. Every year people die eating Mochi which is also extremely chewy (gets stuck in the throat if too big of a piece is swallowed). Both are made with glutinous rice.

The news article you speak of is elderly people in their late years trying to swallow something a bit too large. There's nothing different then that then people in the USA in their yonder years choking on everything. It's a fluff article.
Point being, Mochi is not for everyone --> But.. these are South Korean rice cakes, not the same.. just saying. I've had both in both countries. These are harder then Nihon mochi.
Someone compared the chewiness to gummy. It is less than that. You won't have trouble chewing it. If you do, you didn't cook it long enough.

I came for the comments but this is one of the oddest
There are always people who want to feign some level of importance or superiority by trying to shit on other's choices. In this case, worrying about 1/4 of a teaspoon of salt is hilarious and only relevant if you slurp all the sauce
If you can't sense the tone from the context then why even bother replying?
Shoot your shot I guess. Nice swing and a miss tho
