I love tteokbokki, I'll give all 3 flavors a try. Bought 2 packs for each.

No need to be concerned about the sodium levels like someone was in the comments. Just don't eat all of the sauce.

Tteokbokki goes well with hardboiled egg fyi. Throw in some green onions as well.

If you wanted to go a step further, buy some fishcakes from ur local asian grocery and throw some in as well.
There's no right way or wrong way to use the exact ingredients but the sauce is the main thing. You should be able to get most of this stuff in your local asian market. My may is not conventional so here it is.

You can google how to make this stuff in the web but here's my ingredients

1 2-lb or 1kg of plain rice cakes, note that you can buy the flat kind and not the roll kind.
3 tablespoon of gochujang paste. Note if it is too hot, you can mix 1/2 of hot gochujang paste and the other half black bean paste.
1-2 tablespoon of raw sugar
1 tablespoon of soup stock powder instead of soy sauce for the umami flavor especially if it has msg
1 6-10 oz of fish cakes. Note that I never used fish cakes and used 1 lb of ground pork instead because it was cheaper
1 tablespoon of garlic
For vegetables:
I use about 12oz to 1lb of green cabbage or napa cabbage.
1 onion chopped
You can use mushrooms or scallons but this is optional.
You can use hard boiled eggs too but it is optional.
Yeah. Cause 1/4 tsp of salt is a lot!

Same as 3 tbsp of ketchup.

Thanks for keeping us updated on how healthy you are

Not a good deal. I go to my local Asian supermarket and just buy plain rice cakes and separate sauce, and brown sugar to make a whole pot of this stuff for much better price.
I do not know how to make these. Would you be kind enough to share your method and best practices, please? I'm very eager to learn. Thank you!

Rice cakes are one of the stranger things to come out of Asian cuisine. It's extremely chewy. It's like eating a thicker gummy bear. I think that's the best way to describe it. Western cuisine doesn't really have a comparison, other than maybe eating chicken gizzards? But even than the comparison isn't good enough.

It is really weird. I'm not into it. I'd rather just eat pasta noodles. I feel like I could choke on it if not careful enough. Every year people die eating Mochi which is also extremely chewy (gets stuck in the throat if too big of a piece is swallowed). Both are made with glutinous rice.

I wouldn't describe it as poultry gizzards in the terms of texture, but my Nihonjin wife and her family love chicken gizzards and chicken cartilage on s stick --> Yakitori is a specialty here.. Applause Mochi is a different beast, and they love it. I'm not a huge fan myself, but yes, the good stuff here is super chewy, glutenous.. but shouldn't stick to your teeth. I'm still not a fan, but i've seen these guys eat mochi if everything. Such is life.

The news article you speak of is elderly people in their late years trying to swallow something a bit too large. There's nothing different then that then people in the USA in their yonder years choking on everything. It's a fluff article.

Point being, Mochi is not for everyone --> But.. these are South Korean rice cakes, not the same.. just saying. I've had both in both countries. These are harder then Nihon mochi. Please

I love the texture of mochi.
Mochi is made of sticky rice. The rice cake in most tteokbokki is made of regular rice. Some of them may use rice cake made of sticky rice but the stickiness of the rice cake is much less than Mochi.
Someone compared the chewiness to gummy. It is less than that. You won't have trouble chewing it. If you do, you didn't cook it long enough.

Where did I say that? Your reading comprehension... Yikes

There are always people who want to feign some level of importance or superiority by trying to shit on other's choices. In this case, worrying about 1/4 of a teaspoon of salt is hilarious and only relevant if you slurp all the sauce

If you can't sense the tone from the context then why even bother replying?

Shoot your shot I guess. Nice swing and a miss tho

These were smaller than I was hoping for. Get a bag of rolled rice cake and add gochujang to your taste.

Thank you so much! I have a few Asian markets nearby and there's an H-Mart opening soon near where I live.
I am very grateful for you taking the time to share your recipe. I'll message you when I make my own. I hope you're having a good day!
