Get hl "remake" black messa. I could not play old one again, it felt so dated.
Black mesa keeps old school vibe with better graphics and funy dialogs.
Half Life 2 is still one of my all-time favorite games. If by some chance you've never played it, it's an absolute no-brainer buy at a buck.
The preorder of the Orange Box is still the best PC gaming purchase I've ever made. So much good stuff packed in there.

I've had the Orange Box since it came in a physical orange box. Good stuff

LOL, someone is upset they finally caught up. Now do you you understand that frame rate and ingame movement aren't directly tied? Mario moves the same speed on OG NES and emulated on a Intel i9 with 4090?

But yes, I was a teen when HL1 came out so you can take a guess how "old" that might make me. I am also old enough to follow simple conversations. Can you say the same Wink

BTW, you might be older than I am if you are still ending trolls in "/shrug." This ain't Usenet.

At least his (our) generation has all of the real estate, cash, and knows about sex.

Whenever I see the Orange Box, I think about how I had to create a steam account on Christmas Day so I could play it.

I really wish I had chosen a better username. I had no idea it would become the center of my PC gaming life.

It looks like they shutdown the PS3 servers but PC ones are still running.

I still have the killer (then) PC I built with dual SLI 8800 GTX video cards. Boots and runs to this day for a few rarely used programs like photoshop 6 that I still run. Had an early Microsoft partner copy of Vista and it still works. Browsers won't update. Prints our family photo calendars once a year. Overclocked Q9450 cpu. Only thing Ive replaced (upgraded really) was the hard drive, but the original 10k rpm raptor even still boots I it fine. I would have bet the mobo or psu capacitors would have failed by now.

The whole Valve collection is 90% off too. I got this then saw that one and because I already owned portal and this when I bought the valve pack I paid 5.85.
Can you provide a link to the valve collection pack? Thanks

This worth getting for a legit copy of portal so I can play Portal RTX? The pirated copy is so outdated it kept crashing even on my 4080

Yes, it's only $1. Buy it to not have to deal with the crashes of the pirated copy so you can actually enjoy the game and feel good that you're supporting game developers in the process.

Actually, some older games did tie the engine - and thus in-game movement - to the frame rate. Quake did, for example, and would play smoothly in slow motion if your computer wasn't fast enough. Some of the Need for Speed games did too, and you could get them to play in ludicrous speed if you removed the 30 fps cap on a modern computer.

But I don't believe Half Life was one of them. Messing up the movement speed in a recent patch seems pretty careless - I can't believe that didn't turn up in internal testing.

Yes I agree it can be a problem in other games, actually I run into this on the Steam Deck at times because I enjoy 10-20 year old shooters. Some games' speed can run away if allowed to operate at uncapped frame rates that were not anticipated (or perhaps possible) at the time of release. For example NecroVisioN: Lost Company I had this exact issue a month or so ago. But guns were also firing at super light speed, NPC's moved like The Flash, and audio sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks just did a few lines of white powder. Total Annihilation even presented this problem in another way at release. The in game timer seemed tied to CPU speed so when playing a (manually) timed multiplayer game the two players could have wildly different times on their in game clock. You'd agree to a 'build time' (no attacks) of 20 minutes and one player might launch their onslaught at 16:00 minutes because he was running a massively fast Pentium 3 thus his in game clock was faster than yours. Lots of arguments and accusations of cheating ensued. BTW, I was the guy with the NASA level PIII 450 Mhz Wink

But to be clear that is NOT what am talking about here. I am referring to the built in default* movement speed that is the equivalent to 25 mph per Valve in a recent interview (which I mentioned). A complaint that is a quarter of a century old. At 1 fps or 1000 fps.

*there is a 'walk' button in HL but it is a hold not toggle. On the Steam Deck this is an easy fix (you can make any button press a toggle, turbo, etc) but on a normal PC you have to install 3rd party software to change actual keyboard behavior. Also, there are mods to fix the 'issue' as well however I am only talking about HL in the vanilla configuration.

You have the dates wrong. HL2 was released in late 2004. This came later.
