A gain knob controls how much amplification is applied. A volume knob controls the output. Effectively, they do the same thing most of the time, controlling volume, since if you control the amplificartion level, you control the output level.
It is fair to say that a high pass filter controls the volume or the gain at and above a frequency, but that's not how most people think of it. It's usually more of a rapid cutoff or a filter that blocks.
I have my sub set up with nines, and they have a built in high pass, so i just disable the high pass on the sub itself by turning it to the maximum frequency. I control the volume/gain with an app.
