Any $150 monitor is going to look pretty weak compared to the one in this iMac. Sure, it might be a bit bigger at 24", but 218ppi (like the iMac) is impossible to get, even at $300.

I would advice to get a m2 Mac mini for 500$ and add whatever 300$ monitor you want. you can get monitor for like 100-150$ so you would save a good chunk of money

shameful a desktop with only 2 ports.
The $849 base model with 7-core GPUs have only 2 ports, and only 1 fan.

The $899 models with 8-core GPU have 4 ports, touch-ID on the keyboard, and have 2 fans for better thermos but also louder fan noise when under stress.

But I like the Green and it's only on sale with the base configuration

Re: M2 Mac Mini
Would you go with 16 gb if you all you plan on doing is simple office work? Literally nothing else.

You can get a M2 16GB/256 for $679 pre taxes from Apple with EDU discount.
vs. $500 for M2 8/256
My wife has 8gb M1 macbook air since it came out, she has been using for zoom, office, remote work, browsing, email and sometimes I see 10+ tabs open, never heard complaints about speed so far.
I personally want 16gb because I am a tech guy, but for majority of average user 8gb is perfectly okay, if you find a good deal.

You can reuse that external monitor for many machines to come -- but this panel is built-in. You're not reusing it anywhere. Once the machine is finished, it's all ewaste.

Common talking point against the iMac, going back decades. But in actuality, these things rarely die. In addition to my M1 iMac, I have a 2009 27" iMac that works good as new, even running Sonoma 14.4. Fifteen years and going strong, how many of you are still using PCs or monitors from 2009?

I'm using a desktop built in late-2012. Using a laptop from 2012 and another from 2013. I have two monitors from 2001, two from 2007, and one from 2011 -- all still in active daily use.

When you want to upgrade from these I-MACs, you'll be throwing out a high end monitor. Just better off to get a quality external one.

Tell me where I get a 4.5K 218ppi external monitor for <$500.

That's the biggest problem.
The other problem is that Apple supports Mac hardware for about 7 years from introduction (not official policy, just a historical average). The M1 is a little over 3 years old, so you're supported for 4 more years.

After support ends, you can run unsupported (no security updates) or you'll still have well-designed hardware you don't want to use on the Internet. There are some unsupported hacks for old Intel Macs to run up to date macOS, but it's made for geeks and not the typical Apple user. And no guarantee you'll have that option in 2028 anyway.

At some price, I'd say it's okay but $900 is way too high for these two flaws.

If it came with 1tb ssd and 16gb ram then I would buy it at this price. Screw Apple for their base models and price gouging for upgrades.

How's the scaling on 24" 4.5k display? I have issues with my 4k display even at 27" when typing and spreadsheets.

218ppi is perfect scaling for macOS, which is why Apple has a consistent ppi for the 24" iMac, the 27" 5K Studio Display and 32" 6K Pro Display XDR (all 218ppi).

This graphic doesn't account for the M1/M3 iMac, but it's the same 218ppi as others in the 'good for Retina' zone.

It is. And shame on all the Apple stockholders/shills giving you the 👎🏼

Wish it came with magic track pad instead... who likes to use the ergonomics of the magic mouse?
