BNTL (Buy Now Think Later)

This is a continuation repost of the FP deal which was for CostCo.com. This deal is for CostCo B&M for instant gratification, limit 2 and expires tomorrow Sunday 3/17. They sold a few while I was doing our weekly shopping in Clackamas, Oregon.

CostCo requires a membership, if you don't have a CostCo near you or don't have a membership you can get one for $699 at Walmart. According to the local Apple rep at CostCo they only have space gray and gold colors, no silver. Links are for reference only.

To check your local CostCo B&M inventory you may have to break sacred rule #1:
  1. Call your local warehouse [costco.com] press option 1.
  2. Ask if they have item 1481769 (space gray) or item 1481772 (gold) in stock or at any other warehouses in your area?
  3. Technically you can check inventory online [costco.com] but I prefer to call.

90 Day Return Policy
2nd year warranty (reminder the Citi CostCo extended warranty is dead)
Free Technical Support

It's so funny that this guy replies to a post with the exact answer. But yet people down vote him ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ there are so many stinking apple sheep on slick deals these days it's embarrassing. I think they're triggered by the fact he said "4 years"

As much as you guys want to make this seem like a good deal, it's a mediocre deal at best. It's 4 years old and 8gb of ram. For $499 I would expect all of you to go crazy but for $650 it's kinda sad you're going wild over this.

TL;DR: If you already have a main computer and just want a laptop to do light internet browsing, this setup is fine. But if you do plan to use it as a main computer, better go for 16gb because it will be smoother when you run professional programs and the SSD will last longer.

It is one of the most common complaints people have about the macs right now. It's not so much 8gb won't be enough for watching Netflix or sending emails, but the 8gb m1 variant wears out SSD faster than the 16gb variant. This is especially true if you have the 256gb SSD, which already has a shorter lifespan because of it's small capacity.

Apple basically designed this so you'll need to replace it after about 5 years. I have two m1 8gb 256gb Mac Minis from 2020, one of them already started to fail due to SSD wear. The other I use as a TV box for my parents and can still handle things like Netflix.

So, it's up to you. If you want to spend $700 on a machine to only watch Netflix, or you know you'll replace it after just a few years, go for it. But if you occasionally need to run software that would require more power, even like MS Office, then 16gb is the better choice., but this machine is $650
No need to be hyperbolic. Apple (and most top tier) SSDs are typically rated for at least 350 TBW with many examples easily exceeding 1000. If you write 100GB every, single day, at the LOW end of that range, the SSD would still last over 9.5 years.

The machine is almost assuredly going to be obsolete well before any SSD fails. Still, it is inexcusable that Apple chooses to solder the NAND chips to the MB.

As for running software, that's user-specific, but I regularly work with complex Excel spreadsheets and Access databases on 8GB RAM Inspiron laptops with very minimal load times and no discernible lag. I would assume that a Macbook's performance would be equal to or better than any Dell. 8GB RAM is definitely not 'ideal' but at $650, this machine will do most things well, and will be supported for at least the next 4+ years.

Saw in other thread "you can't find anything comparable"? Is that just fanboy talk? I see Windows laptop better spec at cheaper price all the time. Why make such comment?

Not sure why Apple can't or refuse to. $499 would get noobs into their ecosystem, who might end up jumping ship long term.

I don't expect a Ferrari
But for $650 I don't expect a Fisher-Price computer either.

16GB brand-name laptop memory is $30-35 on Amazon.. That's retail price, so of course includes profit for whoever is selling it. Meaning the raw chips are even less than that. You can't upgrade Apple computers so you're stuck with whatever Apple wants you to have. For $650 they absolutely could include a reasonable amount of ram on their computers. Don't even get me started on the ssd that is at least half the size it should be.

Then go buy those? Your opinion is bad, so no body really need hear them here. If anyone actually needs a 16GB mac, then they could've gone and config one. If they need storage. External storage is cheap, and most people's been moving into cloud. So really. What is the point of you jumping into this thread?

Only 8gb RAM in 2024? That's more like a 2006 configuration. 256GB SSD is kinda small too. This thing is a toy.

You can buy a good Acer gaming laptop for that amount.

Once you use a silent computer like this you can never go back. I use a m2 mini with 8/256 and it runs great even for open source programming work.
I'm running the same M2 mini for my home office setup and it works great (even supports dual displays). Picked up this M1 MacBook Air deal just to have a laptop to couch surf (wife has had hers for awhile and never hear any complaints and she uses it constantly). We still have two older MacBook Airs (2013/2014) and they a getting a little slow, don't hold a battery charge, and are not able to get MacOS security updates (not bad for having owned them for last 10 to 11 years).

This is a Ferrari. There is a new paradigm and ram now uses swap via your hard drive. Find me a laptop that can edit high res video better than this for $650. It doesn't exits.

swap isn't new by a long shot, it's a very old technology.
good luck with your ssd wearing out in a couple of years since your "computer" will be writing temporary files to it quite often.
256GB drive + "edit high res video" = lmao
