BNTL (Buy Now Think Later)
This is a continuation
repost of the
FP deal which was for CostCo.com. This deal is for CostCo B&M for instant gratification, limit 2 and expires tomorrow Sunday 3/17. They sold a few while I was doing our weekly shopping in Clackamas, Oregon.
CostCo requires a membership, if you don't have a CostCo near you or don't have a membership you can get one for
$699 at Walmart. According to the local Apple rep at CostCo they only have space gray and gold colors, no silver. Links are for reference only.
To check your local CostCo B&M inventory you may have to break sacred rule #1:
- Call your local warehouse [costco.com] press option 1.
- Ask if they have item 1481769 (space gray) or item 1481772 (gold) in stock or at any other warehouses in your area?
- Technically you can check inventory online [costco.com] but I prefer to call.
90 Day Return Policy
2nd year warranty (reminder the
Citi CostCo extended warranty is dead)

As much as you guys want to make this seem like a good deal, it's a mediocre deal at best. It's 4 years old and 8gb of ram. For $499 I would expect all of you to go crazy but for $650 it's kinda sad you're going wild over this.
It is one of the most common complaints people have about the macs right now. It's not so much 8gb won't be enough for watching Netflix or sending emails, but the 8gb m1 variant wears out SSD faster than the 16gb variant. This is especially true if you have the 256gb SSD, which already has a shorter lifespan because of it's small capacity.
Apple basically designed this so you'll need to replace it after about 5 years. I have two m1 8gb 256gb Mac Minis from 2020, one of them already started to fail due to SSD wear. The other I use as a TV box for my parents and can still handle things like Netflix.
So, it's up to you. If you want to spend $700 on a machine to only watch Netflix, or you know you'll replace it after just a few years, go for it. But if you occasionally need to run software that would require more power, even like MS Office, then 16gb is the better choice., but this machine is $650
The machine is almost assuredly going to be obsolete well before any SSD fails. Still, it is inexcusable that Apple chooses to solder the NAND chips to the MB.
As for running software, that's user-specific, but I regularly work with complex Excel spreadsheets and Access databases on 8GB RAM Inspiron laptops with very minimal load times and no discernible lag. I would assume that a Macbook's performance would be equal to or better than any Dell. 8GB RAM is definitely not 'ideal' but at $650, this machine will do most things well, and will be supported for at least the next 4+ years.

But for $650 I don't expect a Fisher-Price computer either.
16GB brand-name laptop memory is $30-35 on Amazon.. That's retail price, so of course includes profit for whoever is selling it. Meaning the raw chips are even less than that. You can't upgrade Apple computers so you're stuck with whatever Apple wants you to have. For $650 they absolutely could include a reasonable amount of ram on their computers. Don't even get me started on the ssd that is at least half the size it should be.

good luck with your ssd wearing out in a couple of years since your "computer" will be writing temporary files to it quite often.
256GB drive + "edit high res video" = lmao
