There are extra fees for seat reservations, checked baggage and a meal which come to about $160 RT. The free carry-on baggage weight limit is just 7kg, so if you have more than that you may be better off paying the extra fee of $160 and getting checked baggage (though you'd still be limited to 7kg for carry-on so it's best to put as much in checked and have the free 7kg and not pay extra for the bigger carry-on allotment). If you don't need seat reservations or a meal, and don't have checked baggage, you can pay about $75 RT for the larger 15kg carry-on allotment. Seat reservations would be about $41 RT.

All food and drink is extra, but not expensive (about $2.50-$3 for a soft drink, e.g.) but it's best to bring food (you can get good take-out meals at Narita airport) and drink bottles with you on board). Link to food and drink prices: https://www.zipair.net/en/service/meal

August is hottest month in Japan. I would avoid going there that time of the year.
San Jose and LAX are far away from eachother.. San Jose is an alternative to SFO and Oakland
Flew with them last year. IMO, if you have limited luggage it's fine but they nickel and dime you on everything else

It's not that humid anywhere in Japan compared to most of the USA besides Canada boarder areas. I get what you are saying, and can respect that. When i'm there, I definitely notice the influx of Americans trashing the tourist areas. Enjoy your stay.. I hope you eat a lot of raw fish parts. woot

Trying to book Zipair for Christmas Holiday travel from SFO. Anyone remember what prices were like during that period last year?
Sorry, I don't recall Zipair fares in late December, but I think there were some reasonable fares--including full lie-flat seats that were not too expensive (maybe <$2500RT) in the first ten days of December. But, I think their regular seats were starting to go up in price as you got closer to Christmas so it wasn't that great a deal. You will find fares on other major airlines (ANA, United, Delta, etc.) if you also include LAX, though, for between $1100-$1500 around Christmas, and that may be similar to Zipair--but I think flights from SFO/SJC will be higher by a few hundred dollars.

Seeing that peak period one-way fares on Zipair can be around $600+ each way,--and you may need to add $150-$200 for reservations, luggage, meals--it's likely Zipair around Xmas may not be below $1300.

Disagree, again it couldve been just last year but Im from Malaysia/Indonesia area which is more humid than any place in the US and August 2023 in Osaka was one of the worst things Ive experienced. it wasnt just humid, it was stupid hot (>90F with 90% humidity). before last year, on average, it was bearable but it's getting hotter every year looking at the news.
Its especially the major cities (Tokyo, Osaka, etc) where the heat that gets trapped that makes it really bad. I love Japan but would try to go any other time of the year.

I guess it's just how one takes the weather. I've been going to Japan for 6 years now for 3-6 months a year. It's not a long time of course, but I don't need links to tell me how I take the weather. I have been to Osaka for a total of 46 days total in Spring/Summer/Winter, and I just don't think it's as humid as a lot of the southern USA. I guess it's just about what you feel.

If you're really from Malaysia, which as you said is hot and humid, I don't get it. We're talking about South East Asia compared to Japan woot

Does anyone worry about all the earthquakes that have been going on in Japan? My brother & his whole family booked a 3 weeks trip there in a couple of months.

tl;dr: No

Earthquakes are a real concern, but your brother has already decided to go and there's no "Earthquake season" when they're more likely to happen and there's not too much you can do about it except read up on common sense actions one should take and prepare for.

They should be more concerned about other travel challenges such as getting around, which is a real concern and can wreak havoc on your plans, unless they have someone who's arranged everything.

Also, they should find out the best way of using a data plan so the group can research information and communicate with each other. Downloading useful apps ahead of time will help a lot. Three weeks is a good amount of time to have a great experience so they should enjoy the trip and not worry about the small chance of a major earthquake disrupting their travel.

They should search for travel insurance company ratings and get appropriate insurance in case of delays or medical emergencies.

EDIT: Read this prevoius SD thread mentioning travel tips when flying Zipair and visiting Japan: https://slickdeals.net/f/17248165-roundtrip-nonstop-flight-san-jose-ca-to-tokyo-japan-518-travel-jan-feb-2024?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1&page=1#commentsHeader

I've been to Japan almost every other year for the past 15-years (2-3 weeks at a time) and have only been caught in an earthquake once while we were in a mall. But it was over within 15-20 seconds. Funny thing was that most of the Japanese people just kept shopping like it wasn't even happening.

I've been tracking since the large one (7.6) hit around New Year. Too many quakes 5+ (almost every day/every other day) are happening since. More are coming really worry me.

I've been going for the past 6 years for about 3-6 months at a time to visit my parents-in-law there with my wife. Earthquakes are a normal thing of course in the ring of fire, and you will feel them. I will admit it's quite shocking worship to feel it the first few times.

I was in Nihon 1/1/24 when the 7.6 mag hit the Noto region in Ishikawa.. we were in Saitama prefecture northwest of Tokyo prefecture. We got a nice 3-4 on the shindo scale, which on the 12th floor shakes a bit.. with some aftershocks of course.. but you get used to it. The bigger ones are pretty intense as it feels like the ground just drops out under you as the ground drops in an up and down motion. The smaller ones under 5 intensity just shake from side to side. I left 3/3/24 after an 88 day stay and Chiba prefecture was starting to light up, we'd get some nice quakes daily. It's since lightened up.

I check the official site a few times a day just to see what's going on.. even back in the states... but as you can, you get a lot everyday. New Guinea just got rocked with a 6.7+ mag earlier 3/23.

https://www.data.jma.go.jp/multi/...ml?lang=en

That's just the life there, people are used to it. The next big one is always on the horizon, if you worry about it, you'll be stressed out. I'd say.. don't worry about it.

*My wife and her family sleep through a lot of them.. I woke up to see feel the bed and blinds shaking.. It's still kind of hard to fall back asleep, but I got used to it, and so will you. The buildings there post 1960 and definitely post 1990 are built very tough to withstand much higher quakes. It's all good, just go with the flow.

Here is a link to the SD thread last year for the $428 RT LAX-TYO on Zipair (price without carry-on, checked luggage, or seat reservations or meals-- which adds about $150): https://slickdeals.net/f/17018014-zipair-rt-non-stop-flights-lax-nrt-427-00?src=SiteSearchV2Algo1

The whole 'diming' you for water and food is non-sense when the flight is cheap. Water is like a buck on their flight, meal is ~$10. Just be sure to add $30-40 to your ticket if you want 3 portions of economy food + 3 bottles of water.
