This model doesn't meet the FAA's newly enacted Remote id requirement, but luckily it's out of scope for that requirement so long as you fly it as is with no added weight (and with the included regular sized batteries).

Prop guards or other add ones will tip this over 250g and require you to have a remote id beacon on it during flight. Officially... - as of 3/16/24.

Seems like this is $300 brand new. Even with the 15% coupon, doesn't seem like that great of a deal for refurb?

Can anyone with experience comment on the quality of this vs. similar price competition? Looking to find a small drone to start out with aerial photo and video.

Sounds like a mini model like this doesn't need to be registered or need an FAA license?

Would you recommend this for a beginner or one with a built in screen on the remote?
This is a great beginner drone. No need to get a remote with a screen. You attach your phone to the remote and the app works great on the phone.

If asked by LE, you *must* be able to provide proof that you have passed this exam (it is free and reasonably common sense). I don't know how bad the fines are if you don't, but given that it's a federal thing, I also know I don't want to mess around there.

You also need to ensure that any flights are allowed in the respective airspace when making them, of which there are various apps that use the FAA B4UFLY data.

Additionally, any drones over 250 grams weight MUST have additional ID and registration capabilities that this drone does not have. It is under 250g though, so unless you plan to add weight to it, that wont matter for it.

This is all based on a morning crash course with Google today though, so I am *not* experienced in this. If someone else chimes in with conflicting information, they very likely know more than me.
It says that on the trust website but law enforcement doesn't enforce FAA regulations just like a cop is not going to ask you for your pilots license it just isn't in their wheelhouse. They can ask and report you to the FAA if they think you are in violation just like anyone else can. Police have to have a reasonable suspicion you are doing something illegal to even stop or bother you at all.

Agreed. But any neighbor can place a call to them, sometimes even if they just don't like you; and given that the test is free, took little time, and just needs you to save/print the certificate, I don't see this as a good justification to simply skip doing it.

Just make sure that if you fly it on a very sunny day it may be hard to see the phone screen even if it's on full brightness.

I thought the new regulations meant ALL drones (regardless of weight) need Remote ID

no one said skip doing it if you do get caught without it FAA fines can be pretty hefty Stick Out Tongue

So far it's just drones over 250g that must have remote id. The mini 3 and mini 4 have remote id for future proofing, but it's not needed. This could change in the future, but currently the rule is mini 1, 2, 3 and 4 is exempt from remote id.

https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_s...ster_drone

Above faa.gov link say all drones aver 250g must be registered and all registered drones must have remote id.

Some confusion around this matter but that's what the rule is for now.

Can I use an extra iPhone 11 with this that has no data or cell service? Does it use wifi to communicate with the drone? I would like to have a dedicated phone for it rather than use my main phone. Thanks.

Correct, Police officers can't enforce Federal FAA laws as this would apply to that. Don't answer any questions if asked by the police. You'll only dig your own grave if you talk too much.

Licensing requirements have to do with what you do with the drone. Even if it doesn't require registration, if you're doing commercial work or work that would normally be commercial, you need the FAA license. Say you decide to inspect someone's roof with it for free, technically that's commercial work. You could be fined.
