iRobot is an American company for one. Roborock is Chinese. I know a lot of people don't care, but that's at least to me a good reason to avoid it.

Inevitably I will get some smart@ss that thinks we aren't aware of the fact that most stuff are assembled or manufactured in China. The point is more that the entire software stack on the vacuum and all the data it collects are under Chinese "company" control. I put "company" in quotes, because anyone that has ever dealt with such regimes know it's not just a company. Any large company of sufficient size all have direct ties to the government/CCP.

PS, I'm part Chinese, and being Asian get treated differently than obvious tourists even if they recognize us as tourists when traveling to countries like that.

I bought this about 3 months ago from same eBay site. The item was in new condition and I feel like this was a great price for this unit

Fantastic deal on a really good vacuum. For those that are unaware, the J7 has a front camera with light to detect obstacles and pet messes. I've never experienced the horror stories I have heard about with Roombas running over dog poo and never want to! The only caveat I will add is that I've tried for 2 other deals from the same seller and both units had enough issues that I returned them because I did not want to deal with Allstate. The last few claims on items were a pretty painful process.

Mine is on the 3rd cleaning head. Error 26. Starts to clean and craps out 15 sec later.

Warranty service has been good, but that may change. Concerned about the solvency of the company since the Amazon takeover is blocked.

Yes, unfortunately. Dog hair accumulates around the front wheel (easy enough to remove) and wife's hair around the side brush (have to unscrew it to completely remove) and rollers. Our older Roomba just had tangles around the roller axles when you took them out. This j7+ got some around one of the rollers that cut through the ridges on it and now that's where it accumulates every time.

We've also been disappointed with how frequently it gets stuck by shutting itself in the bathroom, flipping over bath rug corners, or its favorite: getting the bumper stuck. With the latter, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it - it just wants you to tap the bumper a few times and send it on its merry way…

Waiting until we move later this year and Black Friday rolls around to snag a Roborock or similar with LiDAR and mop water tanks now that Roomba lost it's dual roller patent which was its only significant advantage IMO.
LiDAR on my wyze is overrated

Interesting. So what would be the pros of this over roborock?

I initially skimmed this post and read "self-emptying" as "self-employing" and thought nothing wrong with that interpretation until I opened the app several minutes later and realized I was wrong

My only issue w the roombas is that u cannot run them at night while you sleep.

For example, I can run my ecovacs at night on the main floor where there are no bedrooms so doesn't bother anyone while we sleep. But if you try to run the roomba it has an extremely hard time seeing if all your lights are off and does not run.
I know they wanna go the way to Tesla and only use vision and no LiDAR or radar like others. But doesn't work at this time.

These need to run on well lit rooms. i.e. during the day

I had been looking at the j8 (same as J7 just Costco model number) at Costco but like twice as much, at this price I am pulling the trigger for a second unit for the second floor, really good deal worth the risk! REPPED

i've had mine for about 3 years, it's still working pretty well. I haven't needed to bust out the upright vacuum in a loooong time.

It does best on hardwood and low pile carpets. The mapping feature is quite good and it hasn't eaten any wires or cables that I've left out.

I use the braava companion mop, and while it does an okay job, manually mopping is much much better. The braava is about as good as a light wet swiffer.

Also Chinese. I tried to buy non Chinese products. It is hard. Like monitors and laptops, I can get made in Taiwan. But Chinese surveillance camera and robo vacs seem to be much better and affordable. I am as anti Made in China as it gets. But I would hate a $300 product made in the USA that doesn't work for me. According to the reviews, this roomba doesn't work in the dark. That's a deal breaker for me.

I spent 6 months researching a water reverse osmosis system and decided on a system atrictly because it was a california based company. 2 months in, I dumped it and bought a Chinese system. Much better.

APEC. I got their tank version. Worked fine but produced way more waste water than they advertised. It also took the system 2 hours to replenish the tank. Far longer than they advertised. A rep from California called me and told me how it's normal.

Ended up getting Water Drop Tankless. Far superior in terms of amount of water it can dispense in a day. No more waiting for water to be filled up in a tank. Waste to clean water ratio down from 6:1 to 1:2.

APEc also has a tankless system now. But it's also made in China.
