YMMV: Lowes by me has 4 of the DeWalt DW734 12.5" portable thickness planers left at a clearance price of $384.27.

Previous front page deal I saw was a while back at 399.99. Solid deal if anyone needs a bench top planer.

As I understand it, this is not the DeWalt benchtop planer everyone knows and loves (that would be the DW735). Much different unit.

Have this, it's great and takes up a lot less space than the 735. The indeed and outfeed tables also come standard. That's an upcharge for the 735. Also the blades are double-sided so you only need to flip them when the first side dulls.

Note: These are easy to find for 250 or less on FB.

What about the DW735 do you find to make it much superior? Right now it costs $200 more at my local Lowes than this 734. I just watched a comparison video where most comments seem to see both as good options, and this one flat out recommends 734 over 735:

"If you read my comment get the 734 over the 735 I have the 734 it's worth every penny. I carry the 80 pound planner up and down my basement stairs when I do use it and it's awesome to use . The speed of the 734 is slow when moving he boards through which is good for that perfect finish The 735 doesn't make sense in spending extra money on it doesn't even come with the bed for both sides and no locking mechanism."

Does it usually come with that or is that an additional upgrade? I also came across this [youtube.com]video about "upgrading my DeWALT DW735 Planer from straight knives to a Lux Cut III helical head".

I take it this makes a huge difference? Is that important mostly for professional woodworkers, or also casual DIYers?

Sorry dude but that's incorrect.

I have the other planar, the helical blades are a $300-$400 upgrade.

735 has a built in fan to help with dust and chip extraction.

You can get a helical head for it, straight blades otherwise, but I want to say the blades are a bit more robust on the 735.

15 amp motor vs a 12 amp (this is actually pretty solid an improvement).

It's heavier (literally a pro if you're looking for stability and such, definitely a con if you're hauling it around).

Want to say even without tables / wings the bed area the 735 is larger.

Here's a random comparison video: https://youtu.be/08NRFG7zoWI

The 734 is a good planer, and better than the Bauer or HF equivalent, however for a bit more, the 735 is better. That's it. That's the statement.

The next stops for thicknessers are around 1-1.5k, and then you start heading into 3-5k prices for big ones.

Edit: you can get the DW735X, the X signifying that it comes with a spare set of blades and the tables / wings for anywhere around $450-$500 around December. Comes up like clockwork, usually through eBay and sometimes HD.

I just bought the DW734 at Lowe's in Las Vegas for $329. I had to show a receipt in order to get the price match. Hope this helps.Attachment 15470724
