Anyone know if this can be used to motorize the holiday train (set 10254)?
Yes, I was able to do it with mine. The instructions in the back of the holiday train manual won't match exactly, but they do give good enough guidance to figure out the differences from the old style motors.
It's like all train and no track. I take it they have expansion sets for it?
I bought a bunch of knockoff track on AliExpress. Had a few issues on 1 or 2 pieces, but they issued a partial refund and I bought enough it didn't matter. You can also 3d print some freely available track for odds and ends. Not cost effective except for special switch, cross, or custom radius track. I'll see if I can dig up the link in a bit.
Surprised this isn't getting more traction... Seems like a killer price. Unfortunately you only get "half" of a train. Ideally would have a power car at both ends. Maybe will pick up two sets and combine 😁.

Yeah fair enough. I'd at least expect thumbs up even if people don't buy it. But they had to have a deal alert set or be searching for it. Ah well. +18 so far. Seems reasonable. Thanks for your point of view.

There's a 20-piece track set for $20 and an 8-piece set with two switch tracks for $16
