Ali has tons of calipers for cheap, the best I saw in the affordable range are IP54 rated (just search for ip54 digital caliper). You can get them with hardened steel, what seems to be an accessible battery door, and with some level of water resistance. This was on sale on Amazon recently for $20, too.

Electronic versions of something that doesn't need it invites headaches in a year or two when the battery goes dead. Why not just read the digits off the etched metal? Similar to "electronic tire pressure gague", spare me please. The non electric ones ALLWAYS work.
