I have a calendar alert that repeats on March 1st that has the number of bags I used. If I use more, I'll just update it. It gives me a rough reminder of how many I need.

This is $2 but if I want to avoid the artificial colors and get the garden bark that's $6.76. Ridiculous

We find the bags easier than bulk, though the mulch quality is lower. We order 2 pallets delivered then load them up on my Gorilla cart and drop throughout the planting berms. Then come back with a knife to split the bag open, dump, and then spread. Save the time to shovel into a cart from a big pile.
Bulk double ground by me is $30 a cubic yard and brown color enhanced is $39.

Your best best is to look for freshly delivered pallets. If you get the older stuff that has sat there a while, there will be mold. I made the mistake of using some white molded mulch and covering it with unmolded mulch. Fast forward a year, and the white mold has spread and now I needed to shovel all the molded mulch and dispose of it and figure out how to kill the white mold.

For those that prefer natural wood chips, need a lot of them, and don't want to pay a dime… I HIGHLY recommend chipdrop.com.

Ordered these from DoorDash with the coupon ($20 off $45) from other thread. Paid $10 tip to the Dasher. Same price for this in DoorDash Lowe's.
No going around to Lowe's and get them loaded/unloaded.

Home Depot by has started their "Spring Black Friday" and the 2cf Vigoro mulch is $3.33 a bag. I don't know why they aren't competing with Lowe's... maybe they will do their real sale later?

FWIW, we had some heavy rains this week in the metro NYC area and the new Lowe's brown mulch I put down last weekend is already faded. I don't mind that personally, but for those looking for color retention, it didn't.

I picked up 80 bags of this last weekend. Good cheap mulch for what it is. I do have to fluff it occasionally throughout the year and of course replace it annually.

But at this cost, you can't beat it even if it does have to be replaced annually.

I was reminded that I'm not 20 years old anymore - me
And manual don't get along so well anymore.

That nitrogen will only result in the mulch breaking down faster, it won't kill any plants unless you till it in in huge amounts. I've yet to get a batch of chips that stink. And that weird fungus is totally harmless. Even ghe dog puke kind. I get 35 yards of such chips in a load every few years.
It's not mulch if it is high in nitrogen. If you put the fresh cut tree branches around your plants, your plants will die. It's similar to putting too much fertilizer to lawn. Decomposition process needs 4:1 ratio of Carbon to Nitrogen for "compost" to form. And you need to do this by turning the pile. Unless you live in country side where next door neighbor is a half a mile away, it's fine. If you live in an HOA, it's a problem. Yes, it'll eventually break down and add nutrients, but that takes years. I had to pour bags and bags of dry mulch on top of the chips I got delivered. Plus it came with a ton of bugs.

Went there yesterday. If u want a fork lift to load it in truck you must buy entire pallet of 70. Not too bad but then they charge $18 for the pallet lol. Refundable if brought back

I'll disagree with everything you said except bugs. What you are referring to the "richest" part of the tree are called ramial chips and are actually desirable. https://www.mofga.org/resources/m...ial-chips/

In for 53 bags, delivered. Don't have a truck and the convenience is worth it for me. With discounted gift card and CB site it lowers my total to around $3.40/bag, delivered to my house.

It's actually not. 27 Cubic Feet in a cubic yard, 2 cu ft to a bag, meaning you need 13.5 bags at $2 each or $27.50 to buy a yard. Go learn basic math
Actually, it's $27

Do you all remove old mulch before putting new one?
I removed a little bit of the broken down mulch and used it as top dressing in my lawn.

I think it just depends how full your beds are.

You can disagree, but that doesn't make it wrong. Yes, they are richest part, but they have to be decomposed for richness to go back to the soil. I guess, it depends on what purpose you need the chips for. If it's to be used as a walk way, sure. weed control? sure. convert it to compost fast? ehhhh !! In all cases, they'll still steam, smell, get buggy and fungus-y.

If you are using a "thin" layer and till it into the soil, the decomposition process gets sped up and adds nitrogen to the soil. That's kind of the concept of green manure. But if you have a thick layer (4-5 inches high) as mulch, it'll take much longer (years) to decompose without any carbon content. Decomposition or Composting process would need a lot of carbon. It'll eventually break down without it.

I had a few truck loads delivered to me about 8-9 years ago. I spread it all over my stones. I learned the hard way that it was killing my bushes. It rained after a few days and I had "dog puke" fungus all over the mulch. It all broke down after 4-5 years (almost a 8" high spread). Now I have all that good compost that is feeding even more weed !!
