This is a nice lens, definitely worth $500. I use it for landscape shots when I'm hiking. It's a lot lighter than the 2.8 versions and plenty sharp. Unless you need F2.8 for night photography this should do just fine.

For sure, f4 on a lens this wide is going to be plenty 99% of the time. It is exceedingly rare to have a subject in the foreground that requires this width. You don't shoot close subjects with wide angles unless you're trying to be funny. On a full frame camera, this is almost exclusively a landscape lens where you're going to stop it down most or all of the way ala Ansel Adams. In my mind, the image stabilization is much more desirable than one extra stop of aperature for this range.

This is particularly true with the new R cameras' IBIS which play really nice with EF lenses. The only instance where 2.8 or faster apertures come in handy is shooting astrophotography where every stop of light is precious
