Dell G15 Laptop: 15.6" 1080p 165Hz, Ryzen 7 7840HS, RTX 4060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD Expired

This is a very good deal. At $800 this is the cheapest I've seen a new laptop with a full wattage 4060 (though mobile 4060 gpu performance stops scaling past 100w), a decent (though not incredible) screen, and ddr5 memory.

The 7840hs is a upper midrange 8-core current gen zen 4 amd phoenix processor. It will be more than sufficient for any games the mobile 4060 will be capable of running, and should be fairly good for productivity work as well. The 780m igpu this processor has is the best igpu currently available by a sizeable margin. For older and easier to run games it's actually viable to use the igpu rather than the 4060 for gaming, drastically reducing power usage. As an amd phoenix cpu it has a built in npu for ai, though at only 10 TOPS it isn't terribly performant. Unlike previous gen amd cpus, and current gen intel cpus, as a zen 4 cpu the 7840hs supports avx-512. This cpu is also rather power efficient overall.

The mobile rtx 4060 is the cheapest nvidia mobile gpu which has 8gb of vram, which is a crucial threshold. The next step up, the mobile rtx 4070, is around 20% faster in gaming, while having the same amount of vram. In most respects the mobile 4060 is the value sweetspot, since getting a laptop with a similar tier processor, memory, and screen and a mobile 4070 would be at least $300 more. The mobile rtx 4080 is massively superior in terms of performance, but laptops with the 4080 tend to be at absolute minimum $1500.

This laptop has two user accessible ram slots (occupied by 2x 8gb ddr5 4800 ram sticks), and officially supports up to 32gb (2x 16gb) ddr5 5600. That's just the official spec, it should most likely be possible to add 64gb (2x 32gb) of ddr5 5600 ram without issue, but no guarantees. It has two user accessible pcie gen 4 m.2 2280 slots (one occupied by the 512gb ssd), and a m.2 2230 slot for WiFi and Bluetooth combo card (occupied by MediaTek MT7921 wifi 6 + bluetooth 5.3 module). The drives oem's like dell include tend to be slower in general, and 512gb is pretty small, so I'd recommend separately purchasing a mid-tier or higher 2tb drive to place in the primary slot and swapping the 512gb drive this laptop comes with into the secondary slot.

The screen on this laptop is decent, but not incredible. The review I linked above analyzes the screen in a fair amount of detail. It supports advanced optimus (capable of switching between directly displaying from the dgpu or igpu without a restart) and g-sync. Being an ips 1080p display with 300 nits brightness, 100% srgb coverage, a 165hz refresh rate, and decent response times means this laptop screen is competent for the price range. Getting a laptop with similar specs and a better screen will likely cost at absolute minimum $100 more. While higher end laptops will often have 1440p displays, the benefits of a higher resolution are somewhat more limited at this size, and the mobile 4060 is more of a 1080p card anyways.

The dell g15 chassis has an acceptable but not stellar reputation, and this laptop is fairly heavy and bulky overall. The assortment of ports available is competent, though some of the positioning leaves something to be desired. All the reviews I've seen for this intel version of this laptop indicate the power brick is quite large and heavy, and chances are this model uses the same one. This laptop generally falls into the less portable category.

Overall, at $800 this is a very good deal for someone looking for an upper midrange gaming laptop on a budget.

I purchased one G15 but with i5-13th with all discounts (10%, AMex, CB) but 250 nits.
With mine and being forward deployed overseas to a combat zone. It's heavy and not bright. However, it was cheap and works like a beast.
