I'd advise buying Target gift cards online for security. Last time Target had the 5% off sale during the holidays, 1 of my physical gift cards worth $200 was drained to $0 immediately after I purchased it. It took weeks to recover the funds back from Target.

Check out this story talking about it: https://www.nbcbayarea.com/invest...m/3461757/

Target doesn't code as Grocery for any credit card I know of.

Traditionally, it hasn't stacked with red card but would obviously stack with any credit card bonus categories you might have.

Just a reminder that target no longer lets you unload your cards onto your account. They let you store them on your account but not unload them (so for instance you can't throw away the physical card, if you had one). Seems minor but it's annoying since it used to be so amazing being able to combine and store various target GC balances all together.

However, if you pay with a payment method other than Red Card, you get 1% back in Target Circle rewards. In a $100 spend scenario, the Red Card gets you a 5% discount. In the 10% off gift card scenario, you get $101 in store credit for $90. That is a ~10.89% discount for a 5.89% premium over using Red Card.

Edit to add that this does not include any credit card cash back, such as Amex Blue Cash Everyday that gives 3% back on online purchases. In that case, you would get $101 in store credit for $87.3 out of pocket for a 13.56% discount.
Thanks for mentioning the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card. I didn't know it existed. Repped.

FYI for you and others interested: "3% Cash Back on U.S. Online Retail purchases, on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%). Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit."

Also do you have experience with getting 3% using the card for buying gift cards? I know sometimes those get excluded in deal terms & conditions.

I have had Target.com purchases earn 3% cash back on BCE, but I do not recall if I've ever bought a GC at Target.com and earned the cash back.

At the end of day its target purchase. Unlike cashstar its sold on target itself, so you will get 3% back on BCE and bank of america ccs. It used to be good with paypal 5% with chase or discover, but seems like the catagory has changed this year

Not really a deal killer though. As you check out or buy on target.com, you can scan them in the app as separate gift cards. OR if online, you can use a few cards for one purchase, I think the max limit of GC's per transaction was 10?

I do all my shopping at Target, and they are extremely helpful and easy to price match any other store. I frequently price match Walmart, in store and online, without issue. I've also price matched Amazon, Best Buy, etc.
They always make this painful for me.

These deals are mediocre as you do not get the red card discount on the portion u use the gift card for.

Example, $20 purchase and you use a GC for $10 and red card for $10. You only paid $9 for the gift card but your red card saves you only $.50 on the portion you paid on it. So effective discount is 7.5% off the non red card price so only a 2.5% discount over and above the red card. 7.5% is good but I hate their "ransom red card" and find this advertised discount deceptive. if you pay the full balance on the GC you really only save 5% over just using red card cause you're paying 5% more using the GC.

Moreover target sucks, the prices, the selection, I can't stand that store ymmv.

You're essentially getting 5% off because the 5% discount using red card isn't applied when you're using gift card. The 5% red card discount is applied only if the item is in excess of gift card amount.

For example, you buy a $100 gift card, you paid $90 and a savings of $10. When you buy an item that is $100 with gift card or circle card, you use the $100 gift card which you paid $90 for, or just $95 using red card.
Are people really this dumb that you needed to explain this? Sad.

Target's been a ripoff on most items for a while. I'll only shop there if a circle offer is worthwhile. Never understood how that Magnolia section survives. It's all overpriced and hasn't changed for years. Same muted colors and boring hues.

You cannot . Registers are hardcoded to not allow any GC purchase with Target GC. I had cashiers tried it for me , several ways and every time register works decline the transaction. Also Target is not that cheap and unless you find that clearance that you need you are just wasting your time and blocking funds with this "deal"

Any suggested credit cards to use? I checked Discover and Target is not included in this quarterly rewards cycle. If they offer paypal checkout, then the paypal Mastercard offer 3% cb
I have a boa and amex, both 3% online cashback that I use only when I can't get more.
