For example, you buy a $100 gift card, you paid $90 and a savings of $10. When you buy an item that is $100 with gift card or circle card, you use the $100 gift card which you paid $90 for, or just $95 using red card.
Not so sure...
It used to be that, as long as you paid for a portion of your purchase with a red card, you'll still get the 5% off the entire purchase -- pay 90% with a gift card, 10% with your red card and still get an extra 5% off the entire purchase. I believe that's still the case.

Please note that Target CC won't give you the 5% for these purchase. Use your other CC that can maximize your cashback.
Great deal for people who shop at target frequently for whatever they need. Price comparison to Walmart seems to be case by case for different people. Take myself for example; I usually go for milk, egg, frozen fish, and/or ribeye. Price between the 2 often is very close, but target has 10% discount on GC frequent enough that I only use target CC once a year to keep it active. With 10% discount, Target usually is a better deal for me due to my spending habit, which is not the same case for everyone else.
Things that are almost always cheaper at my Target stores include diapers, condiments, milk, eggs (usually), cooking spray, pop, and certain name-brand products.

I'm not questioning that you became a victim of this scam, but how does that even work? Don't all the cards in-store have a secret scratch-off code that the scammer would have had to scratch off and then place the card back on the shelf?

I've had the red card for probably 10? years now and I do not recall it ever giving me the 5% off on any amounts not paid with the red card. So if the purchase was partially paid for by a gift card, only the remaining balance got the 5% off. At least I believe that's always been like this for me.
