Because you're unaware of the difference between a gaming laptop and a workstation/business laptop.
It's funny because this has two USB4 ports which is what people yearn for and homeboy is complaining about old ports with less functionality.
16" with discrete GPU, decent sized battery, good low power display, 8-core efficient CPU and 4lbs, not bad!!

This is how much it should have costed on release, not 2 years later. I like thinkpads (my best friend is a thinkpad) but this is way overpriced. Soldered RAM and non-standard USB-PD charger are cons. Even if soldered, no 32GB RAM option. wifi card is soldered too so no upgrade to wifi7. Good speakers though.

This device was designed for planned obsolescence. I hope framework eats their lunch (though it's obviously way more expensive)

No HDMI and USB-A kills the deal for a business laptop

It's only 0.62 inches height, there's no way to place those obsolete ports.

He's also upset because it also does not have a DVI

Why would they make the ram not upgradable ?
Ask Apple. Or Dell. Or HP. Or anyone who makes modern thin and light laptops.
Thin laptops don't have room for an SODIMM slot.
Technically, very high speed RAM is more reliable when soldered and is faster (lower latency). Try and find 6400MT/s SODIMM's. My Lenovo P16s actually has 7200MT/s chips in it. You simply cannot run high speed ram reliably through a SODIMM connection. Lastly, the use of LPDDR5 (Low Power DDR5) uses less power and extends battery life. I've only ever seen LPDDR5 soldered.

HDMI and USB-A are hardly obsolete just because you don't use them. There are magnitudes more USB products with USB-A connections than USB-C. There are also magnitudes more monitors with HDMI ports than USB-C. I don't disagree that USB-C monitors are the future, but your use of the word "obsolete" is just wrong.

Old ports you say?
What percentage of monitors (old and new) don't have HDMI?
What percentage of external hard drives, wireless mice (non-BT) and flash drives aren't USB-A?

It doesn't have dedicated buttons for track pointer.
Kind of deal breaker if you use track pointer
Thank you!

I can only assume that the downvoters aren't TrackPoint users or don't care about the UltraNav layout (my foremost reason for purchasing ThinkPads). That's perfectly reasonable, but the inclusion of discrete buttons is important to some people – including those with disabilities impacting dexterity.

I might have overlooked this detail, so I sincerely appreciate the heads-up.

This is a good laptop otherwise.
I was interested in it last time it was on sale, and found out that design trade off. Most non ultranav users enjoyed larger apple like trackpad, but like the 40 series that came out 10 years ago, I personally cannot use the integrated ultranav button, and has to return and skip over that entire generation. be able to use track pointer is the primary reason for me as long time Thinkpad user for over 20 years

Great laptop & build quality. Have owned 2 of them. Only caution is that USB4 with Thunderbolt 4 docks is unreliable on this model.

This laptop doesn't have TB4, it has USB 4. which is slightly less capable.
TB4 dock would normally work fine with USB 4, until you do large size file transfers to max speeds.

Exactly. Read my post above. I stated it has USB 4.

I'm telling potential buyers that if they are buying it with the intention of using with Thinkpad Thunderbolt 4 dock, Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 dock, Kennsington Thunderbolt 4 dock, they will be sorely disappointed. (I've tested all above.)

Using of HDMI and USB-A is not obsolete, a 2024 laptop with these ports is obsolete or any 2024 peripheral launched without USB-C. There are many simple solutions for legacy compatibility as a USB-C dock with PD. I already use a USB-C monitor and (almost) never use a USB-A device in my office or home, the only legacy port that I need to use is a RJ45 port for some equipment that cannot be connected in a wireless network, just in a local wired network.

With this laptop?
I happen to have the Thinkpad TB4 dock, and I have a few laptop with TB4 or USB 4. The only issues I have with USB 4 laptop in TB4 dock is when I transfer huge (20g+) size files with USB 3.1 gen 2x2 drives.
I haven't had any other issue, granted, I also hasn't try out one of those TB 4 dock with build in 7600 dgpu, but id like to think for the most majorly of use case, TB4 or USB 4 makes very little difference

Again, you think your scenario is everyones! Not everyone wants to deal with dock. Not everyone has a brand new monitor with USB-C port or dock built-in. I would venture a guess that a large majority of people don't. So while YOU may have set yourself up with the latest and greatest and find no need for USB-A or HDMI ports, that doesn't mean the other 95% of people don't need them.

Personally, I don't like having to use a dongle or adapter just to plug something in that doesn't match an available port. It's infinitely more convenient to have a USB-A and USB-C and RJ45 port on my laptop.

Check out the definition of "obsolete". USB-A and HDMI are not obsolete. Floppy discs and SCSI drive interfaces are obsolete.
