I've got to say that this reeks of bullshit. They are selling licenses to list yourself as TOP TIERâ„¢, so the study is riddled with bias. I just read through the study, and while intake valves showed significantly less deposits, most other areas of the engine did not. The study was over 100 hours with undoubtedly favorable conditions to get the results desired, so attempting to draw any conclusions about what any of this means for long term reliability is not possible. It might be worth considering if someone owns a car from the decade or so of poorly designed direct injected engines that are prone to deposits, but if someone decided to drive 10 miles out of the way to get TOP TIERâ„¢, they are playing a fool's game. If it is already at your Costco, why not? Personally, I'm very comfortable that Sam's doesn't choose to engage in this money grab to license their product as TOP TIERâ„¢, since not being TOP TIERâ„¢ does not mean you have less detergents.

You have to use critical thinking in these things. If adding a little more detergent really added 4% to fuel efficiency and simultaneously decreased emissions, there's no damned way the EPA wouldn't increase the minimum fuel requirements. The truth is that most fuel in the nation would qualify for TOP TIERâ„¢ if they decided to pay TOP TIERâ„¢ for the privelege of branding that way.

Top tier fuel is a badge companies pay for, similar to good housekeeping & to jd power for more validity. Just because a company doesn't opt for the top tier badge, it doesn't mean it isn't good gas.

Once in a while it is 2 cents cheaper but right now its the same as every other gas station in town. Many things end up cheaper at Walmart also.

I've used these deals every year for the last five years. Whenever my year is up, I change my phone number to just some junk number, change my email to a disposable email like 10min mail, and remove my address.

No its not. Retailers/gas companies are not paying just for a "badge" here. This isn't JD powers or BBB certified here. Where did you even get this false information from?


Theres a clear difference when I fill with Top tier gas and other brands in my car. I get less MPG and its so noticeable.

It's not a bad point. You know all of the fuel that comes through a pipeline is the same octane separated by what they call "pigs". These are huge rubber plugs that travel the length of the pipeline with the fuel. These pigs separate the various octanes travelling through the pipeline. Once the fuel reaches its destination, the various gas companies take delivery of it and then add their own blend of additives. But... in essence it's all the same fuel.

So you mean to tell me that when BP/Amaco dropped the Top Tier fuel badge on their product that it got worse? That their additives were not up to Top Tier standards? That your MPG went down once the badge wasnt there? Again the badge is there to add comfort to the purchase, no different than Good Housekeeping or JD Power.

Last time I compared Sam's to Aldi for stuff I actually buy, Aldi was really close on price. Why buy 2x - 6x what you reasonably need to save a couple percent?

I can buy brisket at WM that's select grade for a few dollars more than the prime brisket at Sams. Many times the select is just as good with the marbling. WM is way more convenient for me. Sam's is out of the way.

Pork Butts at Sams cost less than everyday price at the grocery store. But significantly more than the sale price at grocery stores. With 3 grocery stores around me rotating their sale weekends, I really don't need Sam's for this buy.

You can get OTC meds for about the same cost per dose at many places that don't require a membership fee.

Sam's really only wins on foodservice supplies and ready to eat hot dogs. But the food stand at my store is always out of stuff or it closes early due to staffing problems. So really it's just foil pans.

Sam's just doesn't have much going for them these days.
