Zipair, a Japanese low-cost airline headquartered at NRT, wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines, via Travelocity have round trip airfares travelling from Los Angeles (LAX) to Narita Tokyo (NRT) for $428, nonstop. ZIPAIR Tokyo offers six flights from LAX to NRT every week. You may earn ZIPAIR points or exchange JAL (Japan Air Lines) points. ZIPAIR has Boeing 787 Dreamliners in their fleet.

You are allowed a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you, weighing up to 15 lbs. And honestly, 15 lbs packs a lot if you leave your laptop at home. There is FREE wifi onboard throughout the entire flight. Some might say it never worked for them but it does, you'll have to scan the QR code on the back of the seat in front of you and then connect. In-flight food may be purchased in advance or onboard, based on availability....costs about $11 for a hot meal. You'll need 2 because outbound flight is about 11 hrs and return is about 9 hrs. Easy-peasy flight if you fall asleep.

Travel Availability:
Departs LAX: April 21, 23, 24, 25, 28, 29
Returns: May 7-30
To get this airfare deal, use the dates above and book on Travelocity [travelocity.com] You may also purchase directly on Zipair but it is slightly higher. Want to see more travel deals? Golden Week is 29 April to May 5th. Avoid that week if you don't want to end up seeing things closed during your travel.
I flew with them in February and thought was a good low cost experience. They do weight your bags (7kg allowance) but plane was new and service was great and punctual. Check in is only at the counter in the airport. Paid $10 for food and was better than the any US based airline on the flight from Tokyo to LAX but the 7/11 on the airport there had also sushi for $6 that was even better. All in all was great.
The next grand sumo tournament is May 12 through 26...bulb

$10 for all the food (2 meals and a snack on regular flight, I think) during the flight from the US to Tokyo?

EDIT: After I wrote the comment above, I read the OP throughly and realized one meal is $11 which I think is very decent price for the hot meal Japanese airlines usually serve on the flight to Japan.

Another question for you. Did you only buy one meal on the 10+ long hour flight to Japan?

Food is smoke and mirrors on most airlines. Too little and microwave meat is not ideal.
Would pay for healthier meal

It's not so much that a lot of places will be closed during the Golden Week. Rather, just about all businesses and sites will be open, but many well-known tourist locations get jam-packed during this time.

Absolutely hostile baggage policy. If you upgrade one checked bag to 25kg, all bags must be 25kg. Then if you need to add another small bag, they will charge you for another 25kg bag, even if only 10kg.

They will absolutely weigh your carry ons. All of them. 8kg limit isn't only for stowed carrying, also includes personal item.
Weighing bags is CRITICAL because the airline needs to pump enough fuel into the plane to make it across the Pacific Ocean....

...and they're not into topping off every flight.

And if you think that's easy,

Read up on the things that keep 777 pilots up at night - like why's my fuel readings off?!

Does ZipAir provide Inflight Entertainment??
Kinda... you can watch stuff on your own devices via wi-fi where the server is somewhere on board the plane. The seats themselves have no LCD and there isn't one in from for the cabin . The safety demonstration is done the old-school method, by the flight attendants.

The airline is no frills but at least the seats can recline and the tray table is of a regular size, unlike say Frontier Airlines. Skip to ~6:09 of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHqYF_8mW_g to see the device stand and cup holder and a bit later the tray table.

The on-board free wi-fi to reach the Internet (not the streaming content and ordering items on the plane) might be unstably slow (even for checking emails w/o images turned off) for most of the flight. Long story... Basically, don't count it being usable. If it works, score.

I would suggest paying the extra money and going on ANA. They are a very high-quality airline a member of star the food is very good and they are very reliable.
I've taken ANA a few times before COVID and took Zipair for the first time in late 2023. I like ANA but would've a been a LOT more $ vs. what I paid on Zipair even w/all the extras I ended up having to get (e.g. meal and drink each way, baggage allowance, carry-on allowance, etc.) I was fine with saving on the order of $400+ round trip.

My total including taxes, fees, extra, etc. round trip when I did SJO <-> NRT late 2023 was $914.44. I had gone for Japan Mobility Show (fka Tokyo Motor Show) + a bunch of other sightseeing in Japan.

FAA has guidelines for scheduled airlines to estimate the passenger weight without having to weigh each passenger.

Without any doubt, ANA is a great airline to fly on. Like JAL, their economy class seats have extra 3 inches of legroom versus most other airlines'. The issue is how much more one is willing to pay. Everyone has a different tolerance for that.

Yep, with that many people, likely comes out in law of averages. But same with bags, generally. It seems like they could weigh people as they come through the bridge way (anonymously), but weighing directly would be some sort of offense or invasion in the eyes of the customer.

Hey I got some sushi from 7/11 and some extra snacks. I normally would not eat much anyway as the flight was just after lunch... the portion was fair but not huge lets say,

Oh and the food need to be ordered 72h before flight!

I assume you got sushi from Seven Eleven at the airport in Tokyo to eat on the flight back to the US? I believe there is Seven Eleven at Haneda Airport. We got some breads and snack on our way home to the US last summer.

Yes, I know you have to put special meal requests in advance for flights, so I expected same for any meal requests for Zip Air.

Both Japan Airline and ANA have pretty good on flight meals. We are always satisfied with the amount and flavors of their meals. I did not feel they were unhealthy, either. You know, Japanese have higher standard for food and customer service, in general. Since Japan Airline owns Zip Air, I have no doubt about their food and customer service qualities.
