990 EVO is gen5, although it's not rated for speeds higher than the gen4 spec.

EDIT - Looks like Marketing got the best of me. Thanks for the clarification!

This is a PCIe gen 4 drive. Just read the box and the sticker on it: PCIe 4 x4 / PCIe 5 x2. It only gives you half of gen 5, which equals gen 4. The speeds are also gen 4 level.

Either way, intentionally misleading.

The box and sticker read PCIe 4 x4 / PCIe 5 x2... Might as well have added PCIe 6 x1 to it. The speeds are what they are, but the average consumer won't know by the advertised speeds that this is not a Gen 5 drive; they'll just look at the title and label and fall for the false advertisement.

Samsung makes good drives but they do some of that intentional but 'technically correct' misleading marketing.

Yeah, it should be good for PS5.

Side question:

My last 2TB NVME drive for my PS5 died after just around 1 year. I sent it in for RMA but I'm not too excited about using the same drive again for another year. It's a Kingston.

Does the PS5 have a habit of killing NVME drives or did I get a lemon with that drive? My PS5 is well ventilated, the NVME drive did not have a heatsink and lastly I'm not a heavy gamer. I game at most an hour at a time, about 5 days a week. Is a heatsink really necessary for light gaming or was the failed drive at fault?

In certain cases saving 2 pcie lines may be worth something as well. It requires configuration on a loaded side to matter, but may play a role for some

The Playstation website says you need a heatsink for the SSD, so I'd definitely add one. They're less than $10.

"Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink and a heat transfer sheet."

Apparently Mortal Kombat 1 has a history of killing NVME SSD's without heatsinks too.
