On sale through April 9, which usually means the sale ends early on the 9th, so buy on Monday the 8th if you want one.

$320 shipped for a neck-through, active 5-string bass is a slick deal.
These were $800 when they came out, and are still $600 at Sweetwater/GC/MF.
They're listed as "Used- Mint" but come new in box.

The 4-string is available in black and "Rocket Red" (actually traffic cone orange) for the same price.

Looks nice, it's got a Rickenbacker vibe going on.
Jackenbackers are 10/10 for playability, this is a great bass.
The only change using an active instrument is you have to unplug the 1/4" audio cable when you're done playing. The jack is the off switch, and it only uses battery while it's plugged in.

Even if you forget once or twice, the battery lasts for days and days of continuous use. I've never had a battery run out in the middle of practicing or playing out. Just keep a spare 9V in your gig bag and change it once every year or two. You can do the tongue test on the battery in your bass to see if it's getting low before a gig if you're really worried.

I like active EQ on basses because standing right in front of and above the amp doesn't tell you what you sound like in the room. Active EQ lets you adjust your sound from out in front, where you can hear it. You'll often find that what sounds great standing over your amp is a woofy mess in the room.

As someone who realized a long time ago that I can probably never afford a Rickenbacker, this looks amazing. But active electronics scare me lol

Is there anyone here bass smart and royal enough to tell me what kind of pickup upgrades I might want to do to this thing?

Anyone have an opinion on what makes the David Ellefson models different from the corresponding X series basses?

Many manufacturers have distributor agreements, and a common restriction is that the manufacturer cannot sell the item new, as it'll compete with their distributors. Or perhaps they cannot sell them less than "msrp".

A way around that is to sell them as "used" or "refurbished".

On the 4-string, they're standard P and J pickups. You have a million choices.
On the 5, the bridge is standard J, but there isn't one standard for exactly how to build 5 string P pickups, so you might have to do some extra measuring, shopping, or even pickguard trimming.

I recommend that you set up and play any new instrument for a while before concluding you need to swap pickups. This goes double for an active bass, where the EQ can make huge changes to the sound.

Manufacturers often set a "Minimum Advertised Price." Authorized retailers agree to not sell new instruments under MAP in their contract. $320 is probably well under MAP, so they have to call them "Used - Mint" even though they're new in box. ProAudioStar does this frequently: many people report receiving NIB instruments that were sold as "used".

Assuming you mean the CBXM Ellefson with the pickguard:
The Ellefsons have EMG pickups.
Both the Ellefson 4 and 5 have a reverse P. On the CBXNT the 4 is a regular P, the 5 is reverse.
The Ellefsons have no binding on the body or the neck, and the headstock is Fender-y.
The pickups look like they're in about the same place (which is different from a regular PJ...both the J and P are farther towards the neck) but without one in front of me to measure, I can't say for sure.

This thing matches my pro-1 synth and deepmind 12 synth in a bad way. I also have a Lake Placid Squire bass with the brushed gold pickguard. I also have a black Squier guitar upgraded with a noiseless pick kit that has a turtle shell pickguard and a Paisley strap to make it work. Have a td-3 synth too. I don't think I should let people go my music room anymore. It looks mad. also have placid lake Player Tele and Player strat. I bought everything via slickdeals.

Ended up offering $275 for the Green Spectra Bass and it was accepted, so around $290 with tax. Guitar player here and always wanted a Bass to play around with. The Spectra also has the option to play passive, plus I really couldn't get myself to get the concert bass with that headstock, which is surprising because I grew up listening to Anthrax.

After going back-and-forth for the last day on this, I finally decided to pull this trigger on the five string and I think I got the last one. Pretty pumped!

You're welcome!

These basses sound really nice. Tone controls at center gets you that clanky, mid-forward Rickenbacker tone, cutting mids and a bit of highs gets you a more traditional P or J tone, and cutting mids and boosting highs gets you a modern metal tone.

Great score!

All the low-end and midrange Jacksons I've touched seem to come finished and set up better than Squiers of similar price, even though Fender owns both brands. I hope everyone enjoys theirs and no one gets a lemon!

Thanks OP - got one. Was able to get a 5% off offer accepted to make it slightly sweeter Smilie

Does anyone know what the overall length of this guitar is and or what gig bags it will fit in? I was considering picking up a Gator 4G bass gig bag but not sure if this bass is too long and needs a more specialized case or gig bag

Got it today. It is definitely mint/new with no signs of wear. It has a tag that it was set up and inspected by techs at Franklin. Will plug it up tonight.

Nice! Did you get a case or gig bag for it? Is it a 'standard' length bass that will fit any bass gig bag or case?
