Some tips about these: First throw away the cover. Second find an app to alert you if the drive temp climbs. Third do not use it with enterprise drives. Fourth did I mention these do a great job of overheating drives?

Depends on the security on the drive also.

As long as they are sata drives, you should be fine. If they are ide drives, you'll need a different enclosure. If you're copying to a desktop, you could also just connect them internally with a sata cable.

I bought one of these about 1.5 months ago. The construction quality is bottom-of-the-barrel, but it works ok.

Not a good enclosure. Got one the last time this made front page- ended up returning both it and its exchange-replacement after both kept disconnecting randomly both during data transfers and standby.

Sabrent certainly makes shoddy products. I don't think I will ever buy any of their products.

To be fair, virtually every brand has similar problems. I don't know why they can't get anything right THESE DAYS... It's embarrassing and a huge disappointment.

I will not be risking my data with any drive docking station.

I have three HDDS from old dead PCs and am planning on buying a cheap refurbished desktop PC so I could access my data and backup stuff there. Just one disadvantage of owning a laptop.

If the old drive has a Windows OS, will the files saved under a User be locked out? I've had this problem trying to recover stuff from really old drives.

How would one access these files if windows is blocking them?

Its not shoddy its just a different design. Its more secure than slot based models which risk the drive getting knocked over and even those should have a fan pointed at them anyways.

Good to know. Can you share suggestions on enclosures? I've been wanting to get one to use with a drive to take advantage of those refurbished drive deals.

These are great, I have 2 stacked with 16TB drives (one main, the second is mirrored...i use SyncToy to keep the second drive updated) plugged into an Intel NUC with a 9th Gen processor running Plex on Windows. 8th Gen Intel and up is needed to run hardware encoding with Plex Pass...works amazingly well.

It's headless (no monitor, keyboard, mouse) and lives in my closet next to a gigabit switch so I use AnyDesk to access it when I need to (including my phone) I download movies on any computer in the house and add files to these drives since they're networked.

What's the difference between this and the tool free version and is it worth the extra 5 dollars?
Interestingly enough, the tool free version includes screws and a screwdriver which are not needed with the original version. Quite the naming scheme they've come up with there.

Dock-style, not space saving like this, and likely a YMMV situation since it's budget priced but I've had very good luck with the weme usb 3.0A dock off amz.
Never needed the clone function but been running 2 almost constantly (2.5 and 1.5 yrs) and they've both been rock-solid with very fast read/ write. Random find since I purchased the first with sole purpose of setting up freemcboot HDD for my phat-PS2 and it stepped up during a pinch.

Kids today don't know the fun we used to have setting master/slave jumpers on hard drives just to get them to be recognized by the motherboard.

And the grey ribbon cable (with red stripe on 1) impeding airflow through the case

Yes it comes with a wall wart AC adapter. It just won't run on USB bus power alone. No 3.5" drive will.

I have three of these docks, two are connected to NASs 24/7, one for almost five years. No burning HDDs. I must be doing something wrong.
