Considering 1 year subscription of navionics mobile app cost $50, the pre-load map in echomap uhd 74sv is worth at least $50. let alone a better transducer than GT52-TM, touch screen and side view.
How safe is the transducer.... say you fall overboard and the transducer is on ? Can you hold the transducer with your hand around it in the water while active ? Can you use it as a hand held unit (not mounted) to just scan and point it at whatever under your kayak ? I'm kinda thinking of using one of these side scan sonar from the side of the docks just to see what is down there underwater.
I use to do this with two 6V sla batteries and a broken tip 11foot steelhead rod and do drivebys around structure and bridge pylons looking for fish. Let's you cover a lot of area and not waste time around areas not holding fish.

Aren't you allowed like 2 updates on the maps for free. I remember something like waiting as long as you can before logging/creating an active captain account. I want to add that this is a hell of a deal, Cabelas already did the 25% off stacking for you, now stacking a 10% giftcard and run like a bandit.

So doing it that way you could see the bottom and any structures it might have ? Did you have one of those sonars that's normally mounted on a bass boat on the transom ? Do you think the active transducer would have hurt you if you grabbed it while it was in the water and active ?

I would suggest watching some sonar tutorials w regards to sidescan. I don't think you fully understand what it would show. Traditional sonar is a cone so the deeper you go the larger the cone. Using traditional or clearview you can make out bridge piling etc to the side of the transducer. Using livescope you get real time views of whateer you are pointing at. Sidescan is somewhat of a hybrid arial view.
Honestly it sounds like you are looking for livescope which allows you to mount the transducer on your trolling motor or a movable pole to you can point at something and get an idea of how deep and how many feet in front of your transducer the fish or object is.

What I want is a view of the bottom through murky water and see what features it has. This unit says it's livescope compatible so, I don't know if that means purchasing another transducer or using the one it comes with. I got the unit, I guess I'll test it and see if it works for my needs.

This unit will do normal/basic down scan(cone directly below boat), ClearVU (basically down scan on steroids), and side scan. Side scan basically shows you a "slice" of the water column(from transducer down to the lake bed which extends out well beyond the sides of the boat as you move along.
This unit can display Livescope {garmin's forward facing sonar) but you will need a high dollar LS transducer. Sidescan displays like this unit are usually best installed at the boats helm where you can idle around (straight lines are best) and mark structure via waypoints on the unit or with marker buoys. Sidescan transducers will usually be mounted on the rear of the boat.
Livescope is often used at the front of the boat with the transducer mounted on or in the trolling motor(or on a dedicated transducer mount) so you can aim the horizontal/forward facing sonar beam where ever you want and see fish and lures actually moving in the water column in real time.

So what do you think would happen if you put the transducer at the end of a stick in the water and in clearvu mode, aimed it forward ? Even if not pointed straight down, would the sonar still provide some sort of image enough to identify the bottom and any structures on the bottom ?

It sees just like if it's on a boat. I'm not stupid enough to find that out if holding a live transducer would hurt me.

Keep in mind I'm no expert...I have been crashing coursing sonars this past week as I just bought one of these units from BPS for my boat. From what I understand down and side scanning sonars will need to be moving to get an accurate image. In fact it's pretty important while scanning to set/adjust "scan speed" on the sonar to roughly match, or set slightly faster than, the speed of the boat while in use. If they are not moving each scan pass "piles" up on the other and you get little to no target separation/detail. As far as horizontal aiming a standard transducer...I'm not sure but if it worked I would think you'd see tons of people doing it and not forking over thousands for forward facing sonar rigs.
