I agree that a D-handle is good for shoveling, but for actually digging, in difficult ground with rocks and boulders and tree roots, long handle is the way to go. I have both. The long handle is needed for thrusting the shovel into the ground or for steadying yourself if jumping on the shovel head. Actually, I have two of this long handle version, which is absolutely phenomenal for prying boulders out of the ground.
FYI unless Fiskars has been bought out they have great customer service. I actually broke one of these shovels and they sent a replacement lickety split.
I've broken every shovel that wasn't a 1-piece like this. Absolutely worth it, I rarely see them under $30 anywhere.

You might still bend it, but you won't snap it off. Gotta love rocky soil and stumps….

STUMPFEST! Wooo!

As someone who has shoveled his share of dirt (in the military), get one with a d-handle. It's just overall easier to work with. The d-handled shovels were the first ones everybody grabbed.

Yeah, heaviest shovel I've operated. Very sturdy shovel. You'd want to use it for difficult digging situations like rock strewn soil. Just moving loose debris, the shovel is overkill.

By far my favorite shovel. Yes, it's noticeably heavier than others, but when I want to dig, this gets the job done.

For those who need cheap shovels, Aldis should have some for $11.
