I agree that a D-handle is good for shoveling, but for actually digging, in difficult ground with rocks and boulders and tree roots, long handle is the way to go. I have both. The long handle is needed for thrusting the shovel into the ground or for steadying yourself if jumping on the shovel head. Actually, I have two of this long handle version, which is absolutely phenomenal for prying boulders out of the ground.
FYI unless Fiskars has been bought out they have great customer service. I actually broke one of these shovels and they sent a replacement lickety split.
I've broken every shovel that wasn't a 1-piece like this. Absolutely worth it, I rarely see them under $30 anywhere.

You might still bend it, but you won't snap it off. Gotta love rocky soil and stumps….

STUMPFEST! Wooo!

Same here. They just sent a new one, only needed a picture of the break.

One major issue with this steel handle shovel. It will kill you quick if you hit an underground power line.

But that makes it more of a fun challenge, come on!

Unrelated, but how deep does a "shallow grave" in the they desert need to be?

I bought one last time it was on sale and absolutely love it, I no longer have to worry about breaking a shovel every time I dig, fiberglass and wood handles just don't compare. Only downside I see is weight, it's a heavy shovel and you're probably gonna need to be in decent shape to use it for extended periods.

As tsglen said, this is great for digging. It easily supports a person's weight and stands up to serious levering where other shovels would break. I wouldn't to transfer a pile of dirt with it.

On the target website it says that full price was $29.99 originally, not $46...

I dig for a living. Mine came yesterday little heavier than I wanted by like a pound or so seems like it will do great for prying open clay walls and what not. Will see if the excess weight for strength and shape is worth it over the fiber glass/wooden handle digging shovels
