Google just increased the trade-in value for older Apple and Samsung tables .

You're not wrong. If you currently have a Samsung tablet that you love and are just looking to upgrade, you'll generally get better deals trading it in to good ol' Sammy in the states. If you have an old IPad, you most likely won't like the change in ecosystem. However, if you have the oldest tabs that Google is accepting trade-ins for, like the S6 Lite, you do get a better trade-in deal here.

Meanwhile an old iPad is still infinitely more valuable than any android tablet, which are a dime a dozen

Let's face it, it is a niche product for tech enthusiasts who don't mind spending money to "test out" products with unique features.
The entire android tablet market is like that right now. Some of them have decent hardware, like Samsung s-ultra series. But on the software level, especially with the apps, IOS got them beat by a long shot. Few developers will bother to improve Android tablet apps. Most of them simply publish the phone apps and hope it's functional enough in tablets' screen size.
As for things like kindle fire, I have one, and I wouldn't touch it even if you pay me money to use it. Literally the worst $200 I've spent on an electronic product.
