Be aware that these are the base M1 models with binned 7-core GPUs, only 2 ports and no touchID on the keyboard. I'd personally recommend spending the extra &100 on the 8-core GPU model with 4 ports and touchID (as well as Ethernet on the power cable).

Amazing deal for an incredible screen, dead silent operation, and fast speeds all around for non-gamers (and even some games are starting to appear for MacOS!!).

The only question: If it's worth another $50 to get the (admittedly, orange only) model with touchID (easier logins and authentications), 1/8th more GPU grunt, 2 more USBC ports, and an ethernet port in the power supply (which is surprisingly convenient!)

I'd say it IS worth another $50 for most people: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/imac...22Deals%22

(Just click on M1 8 Core and then the orange color to see the $850 price)

The best 'deal' is probably open box M1 8 GPU-core (touchID) for $800, excellent condition. That would be worth getting…

Pulled the trigger and bought this iMac. Our current iMac is a 2011. Thanks.

Only an idiot would make a fuss about the power cable.

Maybe he doesn't like the iMac's funny circular power adapter I guess. That is annoying. They could have just use usb-c with a ethernet dongle since that's widely available. Not sure it's a debacle as I don't see many people complaining about it.

ooops I guess people are complaining about it

I have one, but I don't even notice it once it's setup. It's not like an iMac will get moved daily like a laptop would and connect/disconnected often.
Ok Elon, you are back in my good graces again. Smilie Good post.

I see a little value because it makes the iMac thinner and it handles the Ethernet cable and keeps cable management simpler.

The downside: a $5 cable became a $130 cable.

But while I agree with the thoughts, he did say "charger", sooooo….

Would it not just be better to buy an M1 Mac mini and buy a nice monitor and vesa mount it? I understand an all in one solution is easy for people to get and be happy but still just seems over priced.
I have a nice ($350) LG 27UL850-W 4K monitor. Yes, it's bigger than the iMac monitor, but the performance, ppi and scaling are not as good as the iMac.

So I dunno what you have to spend, but $800 worth of Mac mini + monitor did not fit the bill, for me.

The benefit of your setup though is buy the monitor once and keep it for a decade; update the mini every few years at your option. For the iMac, you are locked into both sides.

I get that... but if I have to look at/use a demonstrably worse monitor all that time.. it's of no benefit to me to have a more flexible upgrade option.
The 4K LG monitor I referenced is literally sitting in a closet right now. Both of my M1 iMacs get daily use.

I have SwitchResX. The issues with a 4K monitor and macOS can never be 100% mitigated.

I'm using a 4k screen with my M2 Ultra Studio and I've never seen an issue; please share what "issue" I might see?

Yep, seen that. 1% reduction in speed on a modern Mac, or something like that. Nonissue, just like the SSD "problem" on Macs.

Bigger fish to fry, etc...

Not at all like the SSD speed issue/problem (which I do whole-heartedly agree is a nothing burger).

It has nothing to do with speed, rather text and UI scaling.

The scaling issue is real, simply because in macOS, text is not crisp on a native 4K monitor.

Also the relative size of UI assets is always either too big or too small relative to native content, especially compared to the rest of Macs with screens and/or the Studio Display/Pro Display XDR.

Part two of the article is also useful. https://bjango.com/articles/macex...displays2/

Yep, I read them both. Maybe your eyes see something special; I bought the ASD 5K from Costco and returned it shortly after in favor of the 4k screens.
