Great knives, but even at 30% off Benchmade's prices are ridiculous.

Yes, Benchmade prices have gotten stupid. However, it's a good opportunity to get a great knife at a fair price. For the SD bargain hunters who are happy with DHgate junk (still works, but not a quality product) - this isn't for you. If you want a Benchmade without feeling like you've been robbed, this is for you.

I remember thinking the same, but time will tell. Chinese knock offs aren't made of the same quality metals for the blades, body or scales. I bought some benchmade gold class knock offs, some zero tolerance knock offs before. Won't keep an edge. Id put the blade quality up there with the husky brand at home depot.

Yes real Benchmades are expensive, but I've had some for 15+ years that are still working flawlessly today.

As for losing them, that's not a problem I have, it's always attached to my pocket if not being used throughout the day so I don't lose them.

The internet said 14C28N is the best budget steel for pocket knives.

Is that cope or red pilled?
Good hardness, easy to sharpen, anti-rust... Just doesn't hold an edge as long.

Nothing wrong with it especially on work horse knives that you will be regularly sharpening anyways.

Ever since Hogue came out with the Deka V2 and the Ritter, and Kershaw dropped the Bel Air, Benchmade almost became irrelevant for American made knives. I own a ton of knives, and Benchmade have made some good knives, but agree their prices have went crazy even before the crazy Immunity and Narrows price hikes. If I go American it's Hogue and Kershaw for now, for the more budget/non-custom type knives. I have been leaning more towards quality Chinese brands like Kunwu, Reate, Maxace, Piratech and others, but been buying more Giantmouse, Asher Knives and any Vox stuff lately.
I have a couple Hogue Ritters and a Deka. All of them had bad heat treat on the 20CV blade, it won't hold a candle against a good S30V blade from Spyderco. Zero heat treat on the lock bar. The thing is literally ground out of round which creates noticeable vertical play. Not again Hogue.

I have only bought their Magnacut blades, and never a problem except the crap FRN scales, and bought after market OG scales for those. Not a Spyderco fan in the slightest, not that they are bad, just not into the look and crap deployment hole. The Maverick from Tactile was also a good pick up for me. I have the DLC version, Titanium and a couple micarta scale versions. The Protechs I have bought were also good, the TR series, Mordax and Malibus.

Waiting on Bladeshow ATL in a couple months, last year did the Kizer meet and greet, but plan on the Kunwu, Miguron, Microtech and Giantmouse stuff this year. And can't go wrong with the American Blade Works either.

No matter how good the knife is, if you're gonna use it, invest in a good knife sharpener instead. Buying it and not using it will just make it a paperweight.

Why are you people even in this thread? You clearly are not the target users/collectors.

Get a life, let people spend their money how they wish. If they believe in the product vs. alternatives, let them be.
Totally agree

14C is a good steel, as far as making a very sharp edge and being a great steel, but edge retention is lacking but can be stropped back easily. 154CM doesn't take as sharp an edge, although it gets very sharp no doubt, but it had better edge retention but strops back easy but not as easily as 14C. This is all my opinion and experience with it though, so take that into consideration. Kubey makes some budget knives in D2 and 14C, and they make premium models in better materials, but kept some using 14C steel. I was kind of bummed about that, at first, but the Tityus is still an amazing knife even compared to the others that went with stuff like S35VN and S90. Now is S90 and S35VN a better steel IMO, yes, but at a difference of 50-75 bucks between the 14C and the others I don't think you are getting a bad deal.

I don't have as much experience with the some of the stuff Spyderco uses, because they use a ton of supposedly great materials, and they do them well from what I have heard from buddies that own them. I just am not a fan of most shapes and models some are into, but there are 2 or 3 I like the look of. Kind of like Glock to me when it comes to guns. They make a very reliable product, they make it at a pretty decent price, there are tons of aftermarket parts, the mags work with a ton of other products, they aren't priced bad, but they don't change enough between generations as far as design and innovation. That's what Spyderco and Benchmade are to me, and the same goes for some steels and designs in knives. Other makers come out will cool and sometimes weird designs that aren't for everybody, but they at least try and see what might sell. Spyderco and Benchmade pretty much make the same designs, with mostly the same steel in Benchmades case, because they don't try and get into a new market and are happy where they are. So you get a big fan club that is happy with a good product, but you don't change a lot of things up because you may lose some of your base, and you know they will buy your stuff even when you don't and just keep raising prices. Material and labor costs have went up in the past few years, and that is an explanation for some of the cost, but not an excuse to me for lack of innovation in design or the exponential prices increase that has taken place. Spyderco and Benchmade are great American brands, using mostly all American products, and sometimes 100% American made parts, which is a great thing to know you are supporting American jobs and not potentially supporting unfair labor practices. But if you meet and use some of the foreign brands, you can make an informed decision as to what you think the labor and manufacturing situation is like with them. Some companies are the OEM for some American owned knife brands, like some of Kershaw and Big Idea Design's products, but they are still quality checked by the America company in the end. So take that for what it's worth too. Steel is steel after all, but some do it better than others. So even though D2 may be an old and what some may call a cheap material, but if done right and maintained it can be made into an amazing knife, and the same goes for other blade materials. A great steel like S35VN can be made great, or it be can be made making shortcuts in heat treat or the finish grinding/geometry. Just check reviews from folks you think you can count on, from companies you think you can count on, but even then a great company can let a mistake slip through from time to time or the review may be from someone who has a preference to blade shape locking system or company fanboy bias. I own a ton of blade shapes, steels, and materials that I own that I brag on and some I trash talk on, but I try and give an honest opinion but bias can always sneak into the review. Like I said, I don't own any Spydies, but know folks that do, but I do own Benchmades and others.

I own everything from what some may call cheap, like Sencut and Kubey, all the way to highend production blades and customs like Null, Chris Reeves, Sharp By Design, Vero and others to name a few. But 14C if done right can be a great budget steel, even if used in a higher prices knifem

Yea nice knives but super expensive. And the knock-offs from DHgate are dang near 90% of the way there for a fraction of the cost. Makes it harder and harder to justify as Benchmade keeps raising their prices. I've started selling off my genuine Benchmade knives. The thought of loosing a $150-280 knife just isn't acceptable to me anymore.
If you don't have the money, you don't have it. I get it. We all have to choose where we put our dollars. Food still needs to be put on the table, gas in the car, rent must be paid. I have one and look for decent deals for others. Also bought a used Kershaw that maybe made here or a knockoff I don't know, but it works, was cheap and don't care if I mess it up or lose it. Also have a drawer of cheap garbage. Try to stay with Benchmark, Kershaw, and Buck. (US stuff when I can on last two). Would prefer to support the industry here vs supporting cheap stolen designs meant to flood a market, eliminate the competition then be able to set whatever prices they want for inferior products. Also with limited labor and consumer protections i.e. don't have to test the steel to see if it is what it says. Worry if made with toxic processes, or materials. Don't have to worry if made by kids, slave labor from providences that don't conform to the majority, or bad workplace practices where people have to sleep at the factories or worked so hard they might be committing suicide. Preferably also from any country not trying to dethrone us as a world power so they can push others as they see fit and to take what they want.

Can't go wrong with a Griptilian or a 940 Osborne. Some will say the Bugout, too- but I'd rather the 1st two I mentioned (personal preference- I just feel like the 940 is a prettier/more comfortable knife than the Bugout, and the Griptilian is a workhorse.)
Bought Griptilian S30V for $94.50 with coupon.
