My model Y had 80% charge which was roughly 230 miles with AC on when I picked it up. Running around town day 1, I was down to 160 miles left so I stopped by a supercharger at target and spent 20mins charging to bring it to 220 miles. This wasn't an issue as I went into target to kill 20mins and it was where I wanted when I came out. I had to make sure I had enough for the next day. The next day, I spent an entire day not charging. Then on the 3rd day of my trip, I had to drive somewhere that was 74 miles each way, the car had 140 miles charged, I charged up that morning to bring it close to 200 miles and left on my trip. I made the round trip with 150 miles used and had about 30 mile of range left. I had to make sure I had 1 extra hour before returning the car so I can bring the car to 80% when I return it. It took 45mins to charge from 13% to 81%.
with a non EV, I could have spent one visit at a gas station for 5mins filling up the tank to get 300-350 miles for like a toyota Camry. a full tank would have cost me $50. The 3 supercharger visit cost me $35 with a total time of 85mins.
EV is not a good rental. go with gas. EV are only good for people that have home and solar power that charge while they sleep. Its not good for road trips or when you're not planning the day. when you're on vacation, you're trying to visit places and not worry about charging to make it to your destination.
so there you have it, EV is cheaper to rent but the trade off is you're spending more time charging.
GAS is more and it's faster to fill up to get more miles on the drive.
You know how everyone rather pay money to be fast for something. such as, first in line, first in the airplane, TSA preCheck, first in the front of disneyland line, etc. Well, with renting gas car, you get more miles faster by filling up with gas and you spend more compare to EV so there fore, it's better. a full tank of any average car gets 350 to 400 miles. a full tank on a tesla is 250 miles (they suggest keeping it max at 80% charge)
time is money, I rather gain more time by spending more. so there's no real benefit to EV rental. I could have spent an extra hour or two at my destination if I didn't have to trade it for charging time.
I find it incredible that rental drivers find issue with EVs and not the rental companies for giving them a car with less than a "full tank".
There's also a LOT to be said for them not educating their customers on EV use, what's "normal", what is worse and better vs ICE cars, etc. |How to route based on charger availability, how the efficiency works based on climate, etc.
Absolutely astounded that people would believe corporate chatter over actual information and knowledge. Although I guess that's the new norm: rumors and "social media degree" misinformation.
EVs are not for everyone, but at least understand what you're talking about before making public announcements. I'm not going to yell about an ICE truck that couldn't haul my load far enough because I decided to fill the fuel tank with peanut oil and corn nuts and never ask about how diesel vs. gas works..... it's always so odd having these conversations.

Then, as a renter of some strange EV car I've never driven before, the charging network is the biggest bait and switch yet. I currently a) don't need an app and b) don't have to look up the brand when I get gas in my gas rental car. I think, for mass adoption, and to make a pleasant rental experience, you need EVs to solve both of these problems at a minimum. Otherwise, and I'm only half joking...toss in an extra battery or power brick so I can add charge at my destination! It's funny that I can toss a power brick in my bag for a cell phone when I have no idea where/when I can charge it but I can't do something that simple for an EV!
Tried to get Model Y, but only Model 3 available ...

I went to a free charging station first. Seemed like it was taking too long. Went to a paid one and there was a line. Went back to the free one. Realized it was going to take until 4am to get around half charged. Went back to the paid one and waited in the line.
I was there until 1am to get it charged to 70%. Filed a BBB complaint and got refunded for the rental. Really turned me off to EV's.
