This exact configuration on best buy NEW is 1049.99 and open box from 911. So this isnt too bad of a price. Its a hard sell though at any price. These surfaces need keyboards that are often sold separately. The form factor is the selling point but realize it is not enjoyable in your lap while in your lap or tummy in bed. In bed, your most creative ideas happen. Writing a novel, doing excel spreadsheets for financing etc, opening up an etsy store, light programming, messing around with AI when bored. Take all this into consideration. I had a 7+ pro for a few weeks before deciding to return it at best buy.

Would this be a meaningful upgrade to my Surface Pro 7? My SP 7 has a 10th Gen i5, 8GB or RAM (which is its achilles heel) and 256GB SSD (which is also barely adequate). Or should I wait to see what Microsoft has in store in June when this mystical, completely redesigned Surface Pro 11 with ARM is supposed to appear with its magical 15 hour (for real this time!) battery life? Theoretically ARM chips should be cheaper than x86 CPUs in the long run. Although they may be more expensive initially.
Surface Pro 10, not 11.

From a Surface Pro 7, it would be a meaningful upgrade as it's a new chassis, better webcam, better display, better keyboard and pen, has 16GB of RAM versus your 8GB, USBC, etc.. However, if you can wait, I would wait and see what the ARM Surface Pro 10 is like.

You're right. I think I'll wait. I use my SP7 docked 98% of the time via the OG Surface Dock. I drive two external 4K screens with it. So for me, the most important thing is the CPU and iGPU speed. And I don't think those improved all that much from 10th gen Intel to 12th gen. (Unless I'm wrong about that.)

Let's see what Windows on ARM brings in June. I'm OK using my SP7 a couple more years if I need to. An upgrade for me is more of a want than a need.

Well, the SP10 moniker is kinda taken by the "SP10 for Business". Rumor has it, the new consumer SP, supposedly launched in June 2024, will have a complete redesign. If that is indeed the case, it would be goofy to call that SP10 as well.

Most of the stories already have the outside dimensions of the device the same as the Surface Pro 9. Possible OLED display, and new ARM CPU. The new consumer version of the Surface will still be the Surface Pro 10.

I doubt it would be a complete redesign because Microsoft has been very good about keeping compatibility with previous accessories.

It would probably be the thinness of the Surface Pro X as they don't need the cooling system that Intel needed. Most loved the design of the Surface Pro X except for the weak Qualcomm SoC. The Surface Pro 8 retained as much of the design as possible but the thickness is pretty similar to the Surface Pro 7.

Wait for SP10 with new ARM chip but pray Microsoft has better x86 emulation so non-ARM apps will run fast. Without a good x86 chip, it will be great for native apps which aren't many but Chrome is native now! If you run other apps like Photoshop etc you will suffer badly.

It's going to be SP X with ARM X chip and SP 10 with Intel Ultra chip. They always have a dual line up because they have not committed fully to ARM64 architecture and they can't commit 100% to ARM yet since 99.99% of the Windows machine are x86 and will be for a very long time. Unless they have a magical x86 emulation this time to run apps are close to native chip speed.

According to the review on notebookcheck [notebookcheck.net]:
"Microsoft has reduced the battery capacity from 51.5 to 47.7 Wh, but overall the runtimes are very similar to the old Surface Pro 8. At a brightness of 150 cd/m² (corresponding to 62% of the maximum brightness on the review device). In the video test, almost 9.5 hours was possible, and 7.5 hours for the Wi-Fi test. Our Wi-Fi test runs for just over 5 hours on maximum brightness.
As soon as you switch to 120 Hz mode, the runtime again drops noticeably. We have listed the values for the three scenarios in the table below. You should therefore avoid 120 Hz mode when on the road."
150 cd/m2 is pretty dim though. I think fine if you are listening to a YouTube which is what I do sometimes if it's just more news-ish content

Battery will never be great on this device if you are using it with decent brightness

New arm chip may rescue it

If you can always bring a charger (to work 8+ hours) and don't mind thermo throttling then it is a nice device. You need a keyboard though to be super productive as a laptop. If you are productive using a tablet then it's great mobile device at 2 lbs and infinitely more flexible than iPad IMO since you have a full windows OS

Damn, it's the 8 GB model only. Otherwise I'd probably roll the dice

I fear you're right. Let's see. Apple made the jump seamlessly. Windows has no choice but to follow suit.

It's not Microsoft following Apple. No vendor has made good arm soc for notebooks and desktops before Apple. Arm for windows has been around a long time, hampered by smartphone processors. Qualcomm now has some key people from the Apple team that made the m processors. The translation layer in windows works well and doesn't have major compatibility problems. It had performance issues because of the chipsets they had available. Even native apps didn't run fantastically on those smartphone processors.

Glad to hear that. I considered the Surface Pro X back in the day, and it was not very good reviewers said.
