Anyone tried purchasing unlock code via ebay or third party unlocking services? I found one at ebay for about $10, and one of the requirements seem to be all Att bill need to be paid. So after canceling service and paying off the final prorated bill, the ebay unlock code should theoretically work.
I think they do some variation of SIM swap. You could also chat with a CS and see if they give you the code. I have seen two reports so far of people getting the code from CS

I canceled the service within 24 hours from ordering the phone. Some Q

How do you know account is cancelled? Got an email saying

"Hello ,

The wireless number 512xxxxxxxx is no longer associated with user ID @gmail.com. This change may be due to a request you made, or the wireless account may have been closed."

Agent said nothing is owed. How do you see $0 bill in att account? It shows $0.00 still in main screen.

My port is still in progress. Tello still works

Alright, imagine I'm completely clueless about the cell phone and cellular network provider purchase process in the USA. I go ahead with the purchase, disregarding all the instructions provided. I forget to cancel the line before activation and overlook the other necessary steps. What's the worst-case scenario I could face?

I think that's pretty much it. I would have told you to make some calls with the SIM to check that you actually can't but your porting has not gone through so no point in checking. ATT has a random date for bill generation for every account so they will send out a bill later on. I mentioned in the original post what you can do with that.

1. The phone will be locked to ATT, might be able to get it unlocked after 60 days.

2. You can still cancel the line within 14 days and pay only for activation fee plus 14 days of service.

ATT might send you a bill for a month but you can chat to get the charges waived see original post.

Yeah, I kept on getting not being able to check out, and then it was able to at some point, but the screen has just said "waiting to be shipped" and "we'll let you know when it ships" since last THUR. so I don't have high hopes.

$109 bill came up. Did the whole "don't recognize this fee" for the $35 portion, waiting for it to hit. Time to hit up chat reps for the next part.

EDIT: That was odd. Looks like the request to remove the $35 fee was denied. Wonder if they're starting to go back on their 3-day policy.

Yep, chat CSR's giving me a rough time. They're really pushing back on waiving any of the charges.

EDIT: Down to $40.67 total remaining for now.

Ok.. so if I take the moral high ground / lazy route on this one, you're obligated to use AT&T for 60 days ( 2 months of services ) & once that's up, you're able to cancel without any issue. That still seems like a deal, yeah?

"Was paid in full when you bought it (it was not purchased on an installment plan). You must wait 60 days from your purchase date to submit an unlock request." - AT&T Source [att.com]
