The $0.01 is the indication that the code is working supposedly, so should be fine.
Unfortunately to enter the code you do have to fill out the new member stuff and either sign in (if your previous account is expired more than 18 months) or create a new account. Only then does it let you go to the checkout page to enter the code

That is what I needed to know, where was the place to enter the Promo Code.
Yeah, I have to create a membership first before I get to this page. Makes sense I guess. But I am not on the hook for anything yet.
But at least after doing the Apply Code with SLICK24, if the Gold Star Membership changes from $60.00 to $59.99 the code is still good.
Before I enter any payment information.
Then the Buy Membership step is where I enter payment information. I have a Visa card, so all set there.
Update 5/3/24:
I proceeded with the process. When I typed SLICK24 into the Promo Code box and clicked Apply Code, the Order Total dropped to $59.99. Finished the order with my Visa card.
Received the Order Confirmation email which I will take into Costco to get all set up.
Hopefully the email with the Shop Card info will arrive soon.
I took lots of screen shots during the process. I would like to document the process with them in intense detail in a future update here once I figure out how to include images inline instead of attachments.
Update 5/4/24:
Here I go with my immensely detailed procedure, based on my experience. When I do these things I try not to make the reader guess at anything. The main assumption is that the person (e.g. me) has never, ever been a Costco member. No existing account, no existing Membership Number. (The Create Account page has a place for an optional Membership Number.)
So I apologize if some of this is obvious to some.
FWIW, Firefox on Windows 10 Pro, in a profile that doesn't have an ad blocker and using Standard Browser Privacy.
At the Costco main page, there is a Membership at the right side of the blue "ribbon." Clicking on it will display a pulldown.

Click on Join Today. What is displayed next is the Join Costco page.

There one has a choice of the $120/yr of $60/yr memberships. (At the bottom is the triple play deal for the $120/yr membership.) This post is about the $60/yr membership, so click on Start Saving on the right.
The next page will be the Membership Application.

I left everything checked, I can always opt out later.
(For some reason I kept getting a Please enter a valid phone number message. I eventually discovered it was from an automated form filler. Once I cleared it my phone number was OK.)
Click Save & Continue at the bottom.

What initially confused me was the special character set shown. I thought only those shown were excepted. They are just an example. I use https://www.thebitmill.
Once everything passes muster, click Create Account.
The next page is New Membership or Membership Checkout.

One can use a Visa or Mastercard, but only Visa works for this deal. Also further down is the verbiage for automatic opt-in on automatic renew with the Visa. (A requirement for this deal.)
On the right in Order Summary is the place for the Promo Code. Just for kicks, before I entered the payment information, I entered SLICK24 into Promo Code and clicked on Apply Code.

The Order Total became $59.99 which indicates the Promo Code was accepted. (Theoretically)

Fill in the payment information (again, I blanked mine) and click Buy Membership.
The next screen will be the order confirmation.

The new membership number is displayed twice. Obviously I blanked mine.
I soon received an email from [email protected]: Your Costco.com Order Number xxxxxxxxxx is Confirmed.
I printed it and took it to Costco to get my membership card.
Now waiting for the email for the $40 shop card to make this all worthwhile.
I hope this will be helpful for this and future Costco deals of this type.

It was taking me so long to do this the attachments were disappearing before I finished.

The problem with the deal is that you don't know whether you are getting the $40 card or not till you actually get it. Using the code shows the $0,01 discount on checkout even if you are not eligible. I'm hoping I'm eligible and will get the $40 digital card.
If you go for it, don't forget to use a Visa card with auto-renewal. Best of luck!

On the payment screen there is this text:
If you are purchasing this membership with a Visa card, you agree that your Costco membership fee will automatically renew at the membership price you've selected and be charged to your selected credit card annually on the first day of your renewal month until you choose a different form of payment of cancel your Costco membership.
If you are using a different form of payment, you can set up Auto Renew after the purchase.
So it is an automatic opt-in when signing up using Visa. I checked the Renew Membership part of my Account and my Visa is listed with Use Card for Auto Renew box checked.
edit: membership expired after a day.
Does anyone know if there is any options now? CSR hasn't been helpful at all.
