  • About this Series:
    • It's not easy being teenage martial-artist Ranma Saotome, but it's even worse when your martial-artist father Genma takes you from home at an early age to go on a decade-long training mission. He doesn't speak a word of Chinese, and yet he insists upon bringing you to the cursed training ground known as Jusenkyo, where falling into one of the many springs there instantly turns you into whoever - or whatever - drowned there last.

This is a great deal for the $. I loved the hell out of this show back in jr high. The tapes were absurdly expensive and you had to wait a month for each one.

Then followed all of the chat room roleplays, the fanfics (anyone remember daigkusei no ranma?), the bootleg wall scrolls, the discussions on rec.arts.anime.misc, etc. this show was my jam for at least three years. It dominated mid-90s cosplay, and probably filled a good 20% of animerica's ad pages. It made sense as this was Viz' flagship show.

You had your fandoms with who was the best fighter, which love triangle had the best plot development (or square...or pentagon?)...and of course, who was the hottest. The snes game was pretty good...the PS1 game was like a badly-handling version of Tekken.

This show also kicked off many a sub-vs-dub debate, because not only was the show expensive, but Viz also released the subs at later time than the dubs...and also charges $5 more for it. So it went from a "which is better?" debate to a "is it worth it?" debate.

However, if you're a post-2006 anime watcher, I recommend catching a few episodes to see if it's your thing. I can't really imagine anyone younger than 35 who could get into it. It's one of those shows that's either watched by old-heads or studied for academic purposes for some undergrad-level anthropology class, lol.

However!!! Whenever I meet a ranma fan, I know that he/she and I can totally jam it out...it's like a secret handshake for all of the geriatric millennials anime fans. Give a holler if you grew up with this show.

This was a favorite of mine when I was in high school, I've just recently started watching it with my family as the 12 year old is really in to anime. If it was on some other service I would have bought it but I'm really not up for making another account. But it is a wonderful series.

Good Anime but it's better to donate to the Japanese animators (by looking up their websites online) who only make pennies unfortunately, than paying for a temporary license to watch.

The license can be revoked anytime and there is nothing you can do, since you agreed to their terms upon purchase. Like we saw before with Amazon, Funimation, and recently Sony...

It's on hulu/disney plus to check before you buy; if you aren't sure of how well it's aged 😳

My friend got me into this around '95. I remember wishing I was rich so I could buy all of the VHS tapes - the few that I got were $30 each (which is about $60 in todays money). Amazing that we can now get the entire series for $35.

Paying to temporarily have access to the show is utter nonsense.

Yes. Temporary. Online platforms (TV, movies, music, games, etc) remove content all of the time.

If you're okay with that then go for this "deal." Otherwise I'd strongly recommend just passing this by.

This show takes me back. The first time I watched Ranma it was on a grainy vhs tape that a friend let me borrow, I was 15.
I would watch the seasons, OVA's and movies over and over again. Later, as a 20 year old, as the season 5 episodes were made available to the U.S, I would go to my friend's house where we would have a watch party. It was good times.
I do not remember exactly when it happened, but the English dub voice actor left the show around season 6. I remember having a hard time getting used to the male version of Ranma sounding so different.
It doesn't look like the movie was included in this, but the OVA's are all wonderful stand alones that you can watch without knowing too much about the plot line. Though, I tend to lean more toward physical media; 35 bucks for a long walk down memory lane would not be the worst way I've spent my money. I'm sure I'd have to spend much more for a physical full collection.
Thanks for posting this. Going to google my way into a Ranma iceberg now and enjoy every moment of it!

So is it that you don't get the dub and sub together for one purchase?

Ranma 1/2 is where it all started for me about 20 years ago. I remember one summer, between HS and college, one of my friends lent me a stack of Ranma 1/2 VHS tapes. It must have been about 20 tapes and that I could barely carry them all back to my car. They were dubbed in English, but I found them interesting. I decided to try studying Japanese in freshman year of college. By senior year, I did study abroad in Tokyo. After I graduated I found a job and lived in Osaka for 3 years. I became fluent, moved back to the US and spent the next 10 years working for Japanese companies based in the states.

how do you buy the entire series? I only see season by season. Also, is it dual audio? Or Eng only like this?
