Just wanted to verify my timeline for doing this is right.
- Buy Galaxy a14 on Monday.
- Two day shipping, arrives Wednesday. (Business Day #2)
- Pay off phone Wednesday and make a call/text. (Can I pay off phone earlier - before it arrives?)
- Cancel service Thursday (Business Day #3 - last day to avoid activation fee)
- Leave in drawer without service for 60 days, tweak apps, SD card, settings....
- Unlocked automatically
- Use on any USA network (probably US Mobile).

I would be getting a phone just for a music player for the gym. Would never make a call. What's the best one for that. SD card is a must. And think I could buy directly from store? Thanks op. And if I can't follow time-line listed? Don't want to get dinged with any fees. Thanks
Just buy an older used phone for cheap. If you're looking at a Samsung Galaxy (way overkill for your needs), they stopped including the SD card slot after the S20.

What about getting $43 (free with $40 plan+$3 GV unlock fee) phones from Metro by T-Mobile? You do not need to meet any timeline and you can unlock after 180 days.

I forgot to take note of the new number assigned while ordering. How do I find out that now?
You don't. Just order a new one.

If I need a phone for international travel. Which one to get? Assume all of them takes a SIM card now.

I can't tell which model year version the Moto G Stylus is. Tried google with the model # & the part # that WM reports it as. I believe it is the 2022 version, based on the specs for that phone compared to what I can see on WM.

Buying a house with a mortgage right now will cost you way more than just waiting a little bit. Rates are too high, and prices are also too high.
Rates are fair. Prices are high.

So what's the strategy if you just want to legitimately upgrade an existing line with Verizon? Do you still 'add' a line and then cancel and then re-associate the old number to the new 'cancelled' line? Is there any savings over just doing it the 'normal' way?

I still have a stack of useless moto minis, stuck on android 4.4 and bootloader can't be unlocked
Not entirely useless! Use them for "trade in any phone for $50" type deals that pop up.

Although admittedly I haven't kept up, so maybe that doesn't happen anymore. I recall a couple of years ago that I turned in an OG Moto E for something like $100 off whatever phone it was I was purchasing. I just assumed that generic $50+ trade-ins are still a thing.

I have purchased several pay-as-you-go and postpaid phones directly from stores, usually when they are on clearance. I have them in my garage, basement workshop, at our cottage, etc. They work just like a small tablet without ever having to set them up as phones. It may be a little more work to go to the store, but I think it is worth the time.

Do these phones come with a sim card? Or am I supposed to buy separately?

You know rates have very little to do with supply and demand of houses right?
Having sold real estate when mortgage rates were OVER 14-15%, (1980's) rates have everything to do with supply, demand, values, and sales volume.

I've done this a couple of times but I am no expert. IE $1 X 36 months plus tax on $36 (at least in Illinois) plus a few dollars for pro rated monthly. As long as I cancelled within 3 days of activation, activation fees were waived. So around $40. I did the IPhone 12 at $2.78 month for 36 months. I plane to pay it off for $100.08 plus a few dollars for pro rated monthly. I did all this on Walmart's website without any issues and my phones arrive next week.
So, you are an expert!!

Once phone is unlocked - will they work on Canada networks ?

Logically I think yes as Verizon has roaming to Canada
