Without or without this, get yourself a timer tank drain (solenoid valve) for ~$30 and plumb it into the drain, then just wire it off the compressor. You'll need a couple of right angles, a couple of nipples (or this extension) and a small pan to catch and evaporate the condensate (I add a scotchbrite pad under the outlet to limit/eliminate any spray). A few second purge ever hour or so is normally sufficient and you (almost) never need worry about checking the drain again. Had one on my shop compressor for 5+ years now and works perfectly.

One small tweak: Put the compressor on its own 24hr timer or smart plug separate from the tank drain.

That way, forgetting to turn the compressor off won't lead to it trying to recharge every ~45min in the middle of the night.

Have one and it works great. I use it to drain the air on my big air compressor much easier.

as someone who uses their compressor only a few times per year I ALWAYS say i'm going to buy one of these and never look into it - thank you!

p.s. after looking at the others available on amazon <$15 i didn't see much advantageous of the others, just teflon tape included and adapters for optionally connecting a larger drain hose

Do these work for pancake compressors, or is the drain fitting a different type? (i.e. flared vs NPT)

Won't work on pancake. At least the PC and Ridgid ones that I have.

Dumb question do you have to empty the tank of air to use this drain? I always thought that was the case but those of you with automated drains seems like it's not required.

I have mine on a TP-Link power strip.

I have a nightly schedule to turn the compressor off.

I just have to ask Google to turn it on before I need it.

No, you just open it for a little bit to purge any of the water that has condensed inside the tank. The air pressure in the tank will help blow/blast the water out. If you use a compressor much, this is so much easier compared to what they usually come with. Great price for what it is.

I'd fix your leaks.
