No, you don't need 120Hz+ for tons of games like strategy games, XCom, a gazillion Steam games etc. But VRR, FreeSync etc is a nice feature eliminating screen tearing - if you see any screen tearing you might upgrade your monitor.

Avatar on my XBox is 60Hz in quality mode, and it looks absolutely amazing. I tried 120Hz mode (lower quality) and it looks crazy smooth, but not worth the loss of fidelity.

Not sure about Alan Wake 2, that might benefit from a higher refresh rate.
