Here's a trick I learned. When you are screwing it back together, rotate backwards first slowly. Once you feel the screw 'drop', then you know you are aligned back in the original threads. Then screw it back in. Works everytime without any extra damage to the threads,

I respectfully, strongly disagree that the directions are simple. I do agree that the SSD itself is easy part. But the two halves forming the outer case are clamped with like 12+ J hooks. These are different bc they need to accurately be PUSHED IN at the exact locations of the J clamp, not a sliding motion with credit card. Have to use a *thin* plastic tool followed by a thin plastic card, even less than the typical credit card thickness if one is to be careful. It can be easily damaged without properly disengaging them as the SD encasing is rather thinner than I imagined (I.e. relatively delicate). You gloss over the case disassembly that is probably the most difficult. That part I wrote in detail on YouTube Channel and I even explained the exact location. I do it meticulously as to not leave any nicks. I am very OCD about any damage. That part isnt well explained. And if somebody brute forces it, it can seriously damage. I am merely stating it will not be as easy as some are making it.

Also, for software, the file for the steam OS was confusing bc they used an unfamiliar file "compression" that also looks like the non-compressed file, so there's that wasted time. I had to decompress the stock file then use preferred software to image it on the card. For those who aren't familiar the process can be much more than 15" to figure out the details.. realistically half a day to be planned for worst case scenario. Now if one doesn't care for the case sure just bulldoze through it, I'm not one to be brash. Of course now if u ask me, I can bust it out in 15" but don't make it seem like the process is intuitive bc it may not be so for those just coming in.

I also have Z1 extreme and that was night and day difference. The replacement for that I can honestly say is genuinely 15", even for newbies doing it first time. But not for SD.
Wow. Just wow. You honestly should have just taken it to a professional if it was that hard for you. I have two steam decks and have opened them both up more than once easily. You just start opening the case near the bumper buttons and the rest is super easy.

You last paragraph reveals your motive. Trash the SD because you have an Ally. People are weird.

Obviously portability is nice but anyone wanting to dip their toes into a "steamos" might consider downloading bazzite. It's getting a lot of attention lately with their immutable distro and dedicated to steam and gaming. Shouldn't be any worries about upgrades breaking anything and a reliable dedicated gaming solution

???. You have to understand that when a SD user says "it takes only 15 minutes" .. and I did not find that to be true, I feel that there is a distortion that needs to be set straight. You even see this sentiment on YT. In actual experience something was not right after reading how "easy" these were and spending time figuring out problems. I had no feelings either way, I have both SD and Rog Ally. Steam Deck takes a few more steps that can be challenging. I'm not a super user but neither am I inexperienced. I understand the industry on fundamentals. After reading SD comments, I found a discrepancy in my experience and my expectation which is partly due to this "15 minutes" or so perception. I am letting users know that there MAY be challenges or hurdles along the process and the 15 minutes assessment is not realistic for the uninitiated.

Respectfully, I don't think you got me correctly. Just because I disagree with some comments does not mean I don't love the SD. I just don't like statements that I feel are exaggerated.

I need to look into this but I would prefer it to be based some sort of rolling distro. I guess it depends on how well they can pull off their upgrades.
Probably would pair up well with something like a minisforum hx100g.

now that the oled version is finally uses non-self tapping screws.. it's worth waiting for that. self tapping screws are so trash for longevity.. esp if you plan to open it
if you open it cant you just replace them?

The 512 will have a better screen vs the 64 & 256 models. But not as good as the OLED.
Having owned one of each I'll say the 64/256 is quite a bit better if you're not taking it into sunlight. I mainly used them on the couch or in bed here and there.

That said this is still the best deal going for anybody looking to get into the wonder-handhelds. Much simpler to just plug and play, but you can still tinker if you want to by comparison in Linux. The best overall for me was the Ally, despite the battery and SD card issues. The Legion is a chonk for portable gameplay and the VRR of the Ally is quite a bit more helpful. I'd still recommend the Steam Deck for 90% of the people getting into these though. The Ally and Go really need to be tinkered with here and there to get the best experience.

It's the best micro SD toaster hands down/up
Really is appalling how bad that SD card issue is. Despite that, it's still my favorite of the bunch.

I go for OLED. You can use this as game streaming device. I can play FPS games on xbox cloud or GeforceNow.

$89 for 1TB? When I got my steam deck originally they were $200+ or you had to buy a Samsung and cut it down. Hardly anyone even made 2230 NVMe
