Disease and pests.
They said they were all dead and could take up to 2 days. I knew they were OK because I've had a few and know they can withstand a day in that kind of temp.
I plucked about 30 lemon trees and maybe 4-5 lime trees. I gave about 10-15 away for random people who did work around the house. Gave some to family. I ended up with about 10 or so thriving from that pluck. I don't think any have died. I have them on a pallet that i roll into the garage at the first sign of an overnight freeze under 32-33degrees. And then i roll them back out of garage when temps are consistent in the 40's or higher.

This. I live near several commercial nurseries. Trucks come and pick up loads of trees each day - some go to big boxes, some go to local nurseries. The only difference is how they are cared for once they arrive at their retail destination - the nursery will almost always take better care of them, but I've seen some Lowes and Homes Depot that have well managed nursery staff, but they are in the minority. Get your trees, bushes and plants on delivery day for best chances.

No pun intended.

Your use of scare quotes is questionable, "at best." /s
