I really wanted to get a whole house gen, maybe one day… but it's just way too much money for the once or twice a year I need it for half a day. No nice place to put it near the house/panel either, so I'd need to trench out a good 70' to run the electric back. No NG here either, so I'd just put a couple LP tanks out there by it.
Everybody is so dramatic these days.
I'm an electrician that has been installing these in the PNW for 6 years. Its impossible to know for sure without seeing your setup and distances from the generator to the gas and electrical meters but $16k likely isn't too far off from a reasonable price including the price of the gen.
When I see bids in the $30k range for gens around 20KW its usually because they don't have experience installing them so they overinflate the price to make up for mistakes and extra time spent "figuring it out". Even a long gas and electrical run (100ft) and two transfer switches (required for 320/400 amp services) and multiple load sheds shouldn't cost $30k.
Due to overall pricing, even though Generac is the easy option, I'll be heating down the solar path with the next gen of solar on the horizon. Hopefully we don't have a week without power again before I accomplish.

My suggestion is if you need a 25 kw to buy a 25 kw and forget about load shed modules.
I haven't had issues 3+ years. I needed 25kw + just a little, which is why I have load shed modules. I have probably a higher requirement for power than many.

Issue is it is 400 lbs. I managed to pull it with a dolly. But you will need help to pick it up and install it.
Pays to have strong neighbors.
they put the pipes together, and head the piece over the pipes and the liquid solder, like flows into the pipe and solders together.
the other stuff is easy, thats the only thing id need someone to do as im not a plumber/metal plumber the wires just would be removed from old unit, and connected to the same spots on new unit. assuming generator is same unit/size/model
here's pic.
Thanks for the info!
Keep up the good work buddy, you're a value to the internet!!!

I bought a portable 21k starting watt generator 18k running, with a snorkel, 1" male and female safety quick connect brass fittings, with 1" rubber fuel rated gas hose. Changed some of the pipe on the gas meter to 1" to ensure adequate flow. Pretty easy, plug the hose in to the quick connects, plug the cord into the inlet box, start it up and that's that. I did it all for under 5k including the 3200$ generator.
After I bought the generator, the electrician said you know you can only push ~12k watts through the 50a receptacle. I was thinking I can still run things like the outside fridge with a heavy extension cord if needed, plugged directly into the generator at the same time.
