I have a TV on an articulating arm, so not flush to the wall. I have the seldom used remotes on this stuff on the back of the TV. Perfection.

Just a minor correction: Adhesives love surface area.
If you can rough up a surface at a macro level and are able to to ensure all the adhesive makes contact, it's going to work better than a smooth surface. At a micro level, the more porous a surface is, the better (hence the polished metal not working as well).
The problem, like you said, is that the backer doesn't always find total adhesion because the velcro piece is stiff.
You can sometimes combat this by letting physics help a little. On vertical surfaces, strips should always be placed vertically. But you can get slightly more holding power by placing multiple strips horizontally (I think Velcro has a ratio for how long each should be) to meet a vertical piece of whatever you're mounting. As long as each strip sticks without pulling up, you're golden.
