Options are

Not the point I was making. It isn't just give them an old phone and they give you a credit. New service is required.
Sorry. I misunderstood. I did not see in OP that a new line of service is required. I have taken advantage of the trade in any device promotion for a free phone on an existing line at Costco without having to add a line or pay a device connection fee and received a Costco shop card. I thought this was the same promotion.

Nope no new line just activation, doesn't make much sense to me but it was claimed that it's part of Costco membership benefits

Great deal for a backup phone. The phones this time don't look so great, but a free or money making backup phone is still a good deal if you're certain to keep the account for 24 months. Not a great deal if you need to add a new line. TMobile often has better deals for that.

Got the Edge 2022 and $75 Costco shop card.
No upgrading my plan or adding a line.
As long as TMO rep can find the IMEI of the trade in device the deal should work.
on Simple Choice plan they do not offer good promotions any more. so used this to get 2 Moto G 2024 phones for iPhone 5 and a old Visible ZTE phone.
Apparently broken trade-in phones do not work any more. T-mobile rep at Costco checked all phones that they turn on and even took off the screen protector to see the screen is not cracked.
Moto G was $168, so paid taxes on that amount. Will get monthly credit of $7 for 24 months.
Upgrade on existing lines. No activation Fee. Free shipping. Will hopefully get $100 Costco Cash card for both.
