Once activated you could potentially swap in another Boost sim, that may mess with unlocking later on. In the Razr thread a few people were suggesting the $15 plan or if you were lucky and got the 1yr service deal you could use that SIM.
If you do already have a Boost line, I suggest logging in to see if it's available as an upgrade, my current line is.

To unlock do u need to have the service for 1 year with that phone?
I got a device and the 1 year but I use the service on my main phone.

I had always assumed you needed to maintain service for a year, but here's what their support page says

:
Account must be active: If your account is in "suspended" status one-year post initial activation, your Prepaid Device will not be eligible for unlocking until it is out of "suspended" status.
So, maybe if you can keep your account from getting deleted, I don't know what their policy looks like for inactive accounts. It would be pretty weird trying to keep an account by turning service on and off a bunch.
There was somebody in another boost thread a while back saying they had bought an "upgrade" option and boost immediately unlocked it, so maybe their unlock timer is based on account age?

According to this reddit (which looks like a boost rep responded to), you won't be able to use a boost BYOD sim on the phone.
Now, cancelling, putting a boost BYOD sim on a different phone, and waiting a year might work. But, even if it does, not worth it going 11mos without service on your new phone.

I appreciate this response, but it looks like the support guy is referring to Boost Infinite, which is a different MVNO. I know there is a little overlap with some of the networks, and sometimes like Boost phones can work on T-Mobile etc, but the guy in the thread isn't talking about swapping a boost sim for a boost sim in that specific case.
Honestly I'd have to test it myself to see what happens, I'm kinda waiting for one of these deals to get a little sweeter. I was looking at the $50 S23 FE at metro with lustful eyes.

I pay $15/mo for service now, making making the plan a $540 extra cost.
If it was usable with their $15/5gb/mo or $100/1gb/yr plans and still unlockable in a year, I would consider it.
