I have purchased a 4gb WD refrub by WD from ebay in the past and it died after a year. It was only used to store xbox games which I played rarely.

That's a bummer for sure! Out of curiosity, was it one of the thin/portable (USB Only, no power) drives, or one of these larger AC + USB drives?

I've had a few of the USB Powered ones die on me, but never the larger ones. Just purchased one of these as I missed the 16TB sale a few weeks ago, hoping for the best with the refurb!

As I understand, the drives inside are white labels so not much of a deal IMHO

These are SMR, not CMR. 10TB and up is CMR.

If you're going refurb for important data, it better be a backup of a backup.

I have one of these and it has this "feature" called preemptive wear leveling. It vibrates every 5 seconds or so...

Saving 12 bucks for a refurbished one is not a good idea..especially storage...unless u have redundancies or dont care if u lose data..

Need to get 12GB or higher. Anything lower will be a lot hotter as they are not using helium.

Did the *drive* die or did the *enclosure* die?
The enclosures, SATA -> USB controller, or something else in these (portable and desktop) fail with frightening frequency.

If you have anything vaguely valuable on that drive, it might be worth it to get a $7 enclosure and see if you can just swap it over.

I've done that with… oh man… 30(?) Seagate and WD drives for people over the years.

It might be encrypted, though, which would. Require you sacrifice an enclosure/drive to get the data back.

I don't think 12GB hard drives have been a thing since the 90s.

Drives don't fail simply due to heat.
Every drive should be evaluated against its design spec to see if it's "too hot".
Hard drives only fail for heat-related reasons due to being unevenly cooled, not improperly cooled to some arbitrary temperature number that is "safe."
