No idea why you say IS is mostly for video. Lots of lenses don't have IS built in and it would really help in those cases. Shooting handheld, IS can be great, especially in lower light situations. You could even get cheaper EF lenses without IS and still get the benefits via an adapter with in-body image stabilization. It could actually save money, depending on how many lenses you end up buying.

Depends on use-case -- I would absolutely take the R8 over the R7 due to the full-frame sensor.
Full frame sensor is considerably larger and a 10mm lens will be 10mm equivalent on it. A 50mm will be 50mm on it. The R7 uses a "crop sensor" which is a smaller sensor that doesn't take advantage of the full image produced by the lens, it only uses a "crop" from the center of it. So that 10mm lens will function as if it were a 16mm lens. That 50mm will function as if it were an 80mm lens.

With that said, all "full frame" lenses ("RF" and "EF" (With adapter)) will work on both cameras.. but there are also crop-specific lenses ("RF-S") that are often smaller, lighter and cheaper since they're designed for use on a "Crop Sensor" camera like the R7.

I believe the R7 has built in image stabilization (in the body) so any lens will take advantage of it (good for video and long-length shots, or low light). R7 I think also has 2 card slots.

It depends on what your use-case is and what's important to you -- I prefer the full frame cameras as I mostly do portrait work and use "fast" (f/1.2, f/1.4) lenses and want the nice depth of field and the "full frame" looking image. Someone shooting sports might prefer the extra "zoom" (crop) of the R7, and the extra memory card slot in case one fails. Someone who wants to get into it cheaper (having more affordable RF-S lenses) might also prefer the R7 over the R8

Most things people take handheld photos of require shutter speeds which are fast enough to freeze movement, and produce an acceptably sharp photo. That fast shutter speed also negates any movement from the camera, which is really the only thing IS does.

So really the only use case for IS in still photography is landscape or still life, but even then, In most landscape scenarios, shooting shutter speeds that low will introduce unacceptable amounts of blur from the wind or other natural movement, producing unsharp photos.

So maybe the use case is night time, landscape photos or trying to induce some blur, such as in moving water and compositing with a faster shot of everything else.

Still, land scape or still life, in dark environments are much better are done better with a tripod, which any advanced amateur, who wouldn't be afraid to spend 1600+ dollars on a camera should be carrying.

That leaves video. And while buttery smooth video is still much better produced using a tripod, slider or gimbal, handheld video is where IS shines.

Frankly, I don't know anyone doing handheld photography that is shooting any lens at less then 1/125 of a second, and at that minimum shutter speed, IS does nothing.

Great camera and a good price. I got it for $1079 all in from a particular toe green site last Christmas, in case anyone wants to try that out. My only concern with saving the ~$1k by going with the R8 over the R6MKII was the lack of IBIS, but thankfully I haven't missed it. From my pre-purchase research and then personal experience, I think IBIS isn't necessary. I also picked up the Vello battery grip and a second Canon battery, to ameliorate the issue of the smaller battery with the R8. 100% happy with the Vello product, works perfectly. And for typical hobbiest shooting days, say walking around a city taking the occasional photos, a single battery has been plenty.

No double dip, sadly.
I took the upgrade program over the phone today. Provided the S/N number from my aged T1i camera. The S/N number is actually scratched, only last 6 digits recognizable.

Would you prefer this over the R7? Seen a post for the R6 but the price is a bit steep. I would be upgrading from the t5i so any of these camera would be a significant upgrade.
Unless you're shooting wildlife and prefer the weather sealing go with the R8, I shoot everything on mine and got an R8 while I waited on the r5m2 and havent regretted it

Too much generalization here, definitely people shooting under 1/125 all the time, and IS definitely helps at those speeds. IS also helps a lot when shooting with telephoto lenses, so yes, it helps for much for than just video.

Of course you can get IS in lenses at times.

R8 is an excellent bang for the buck camera. I thought about upgrading to it, but it not having dual card slots was a deal breaker for professional work. If you don't need that functionality, then this camera should be near the top of you consideration list

If you want to spend less and get more then consider a used but close to new condition gears for a lot less at keh or mpb. I got a Nikon Z7 <5k shutter count for $960. I got a few used lenses pretty cheap too. All the used gears work with no issues.

I'm taking over 50k photos a year. For off tripod work I'm setting a minimum shutter speed of 1/125. Fast shutter speeds are the key to sharp photos.

IBIS may theoretically let you hand hold a photo at 1/10, but with no OCF, will never produce a sharp photo of even a slowly moving subject. You'll need at least 1/125 for that.

If we could always use fast shutter speeds we would, sometimes you can't. Ibis doesn't compensate for moving subjects, just camera shake, but people are taking a lot more pictures than moving subjects.

Also there are a lot of shutter speeds between 1/10 and 1/125. Not sure why we went all the way down to 1/10.

Ibis will help at even much higher shutter speeds than 1/125 when you are shooting with telephoto lenses.

Previous owner of 6D, 6DM2, M50, and RP. This camera is leaps and bounds beyond those cameras. Even the 6DM2. The focus system is incredible. For the money, the major players do not offer a better setup.

I did buy this camera around Thanksgiving and I enjoyed using it. It is a good starter camera. I have the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 5D RS 50 megapixels and I saw the huge improvement with the R8 in terms of electronics. I liked the ease of loading pictures from camera to the cell phone using the app and WIFI. Picture qualities were good and colors were great. Then I noticed that Canon throttled this product and I was looking to upgrade to the Canon R6 mark II to get the IBIS and better video control etc. Back then Canon would not allow third parties to make lenses for the R series but few weeks ago they relented and allowed others to make it at least for the APSC format which is R7. Then someone posted on Slickdeals a Panasonic Lumix S5IIx sale that included free lens! The more I read about it the more I liked so I jumped into it. I do like Panasonic Lumix S5IIx better for the expandability and video stability and their IBIS is legendary. I like the help you get from using manual lens, it shows on the screen where it is focused...which helps a lot in focusing manually. I like the fact I had load video directly on external hard drive direct via HDMI and save it as 6K . I can still use my old Canon lenses on the Panasonic using different adaptors from Sigma or Viltrox. Heard that Canon was going to do subscription model for different high level features in the new cameras and you can imagine photographers do not like that at all. I am glad Panasonic had free software upgrade which really improved the camera a lot.

I guess Canon and Nikon didn't know anything about photography, wasting time and effort making all those IS lenses before their DSLRs could take videos, then?

Btw, I take 60k pictures annually, so that must mean my opinion is more correct than yours.

4 months ago I switched from a old full frame Canon 5D Markll to the R8. Had I known how much better my photos would look using the R8 I would have bought the R8 as soon as it was released. The saying "it's the photographer not the camera" isn't entirely true. I shoot almost exclusively sports using my R8 with a Canon 70-200 f2.8 is ii set at 200mm f2.8 1/2000 electronic shutter. I rarely ever see any distortion using electronic shutter which is amazing to me.
