Not sure why you would buy a frost free chest freezer, they are louder, more expensive to run, and don't keep the temp as consistent.

Sounds like you guys were misusing it all around Embarrassment because a chest freezer shouldn't be a constant use thing and yeah you shouldn't be leaving any fridge/freezer open for minutes at a time multiple times a day.

The only time a defroster makes sense on a freezer is an upright but that's because uprights are such an awful form factor you have to go with a frost free model. Uprights are awful because every time you open them the air flushes out so the whole thing has to cool down as opposed to a chest freezer where the air sits when you open it.

It's not as much of a concern on a chest freezer, it's typically only around the opening that ice builds and even then it isn't much. Will you eventually have to defrost it? Yes. After 5yrs with my Midea chest freezer am I even close to needing to do it? No.

Anyone know what the low end operating environment temp is? I see 110 for the high end but I thought I remember reading that low end matters too for in the garage.

Love my chest freezer. I buy discount meats and section them into ziploc bags and toss them in.
Supper is whatever I yank out of the freezer. When I first got mine I filled it up. Have to stop myself from buying more stuff and work on what's in there!
Some of those deals are hard to pass up!

Any recommendations for organizers that work well with this model?
Buy smaller crates at Walmart, they can be helpful in grouping items to quickly remove and find items which is typically the drawback of chest freezers vs. upright freezers. Just be careful with the foil insulation when using crates.

Bought one of these at this price a month or so ago when it was last available.

I will agree with everyone: you should expect at least one or more scratches/dents on the freezer. Mine came with two (minor) dents, and Walmart said the only option to rectify that is to package it up and return it to a Walmart store at your own expense.

That being said, other than the scratch/dent, it's a great freezer for the price. Has lots of room, a handy drawer thing, and it's super chilly. It works way better than the fridge/freezer that came with the house I'm renting.
I got mine at the end of March and it came in perfect condition, thankfully. No scratches or dents and it's been working great.

tempting, but I had no idea TCL made freezers

I googled around and electricity usage is $3-5 bucks a month depending on where you live

They also have a smaller 5 cu ft one for 138

5 years is a long stretch Smilie

I remove ice on mine about yearly. Need to have it no more than 3/4 full. Turn it off for a day, then take a plastic spatula, keep cardboard underneath flush with the wall, and just detach ice with the spatula carefully. One you remove the 1st ice segment - the following ones are way easier. The ice drops to the cardboard.

Remove the ice so it does not sublimate back.

The procedure take about 20 min, no need to take stuff out.

I ordered this last time the deal was around. Came beat to shit so I requested a refund through walmart. Chat assistant said they could schedule a pickup, 2 weeks later I hadn't received the call for pickup. Chatted again, another pickup was put on the return and I still didn't get a call another 2 weeks later. Chatted again last week and was told they would schedule again and to "rest assured."

Getting real close to a chargeback; not my fault they shipped me a unit that was borked and I cant jam it into the back of my car.

Chest freezers are the most inconvenient format, your food will get lost at the bottom of it, unless you love pulling out frozen bags of meats/etc to do inventory. Instead of saving $$ you actually burn more.

Get upright freezer since you can see all that you have relatively easily.

That's the downside. The upside is you can fill it significantly fuller than an upright freezer because you will never fill an upright as full. It is also more energy efficient because it's not filled with hot air as quickly when you open the door.

After getting a frost-free ones, not sure if I'd still buy traditional chest freezers. However, this is a good price.
They don't perform the same task. After around 90 days in a self-defrosting freezer most meats will have high enough ammonia levels to be unsafe. In a chest freezer at around 9 months we start to see elevated levels and around 12 months unsafe. People still eat it, stuff that's 20 years old sometimes, and they seem fine despite a bit slow in the head...

Science proves that unless something is cryogenically frozen it surely does have a shelf life, when your freezer self defrosts some use heating coils and this is especially bad if you have raw meats anywhere near the exterior walls where one may be.

It's an inconvenience and a gamble for a partial convenience. Self defrosting freezers also tend to have around 1/2 to 1/3rd of the life span in recent decades it would seem..

A quick Google search found this plenty of articles from authoritative sources (e.g. NIH) refuting your claims. Unless the government is out to get us with ammonia laced ground beef, I don't think your concerns are valid.

Good price for the size, but... TCL? How long have they been making freezers? How reliable are we expecting it to be, especially considering how "cheap" this is comparatively.
Mine it's the same size but different brand bought like 15 years ago for the same price .

I'm seeing a lot of comments where it arrived damaged. And some got a full refund without having to return it and others would only get a refund if they returned it. That's the one issue where I'd have if they want me to return it. I don't have any way of transporting it.
I bought mine 3 months ago and came without any scratches. i had to say that my FedEx delivery guy is a nice guy and a professional. Never had problems with him. The dents and scratches are from de delivery most of the times..
